Build the right terrarium base layer

Closed terrariums need a stable base that balances moisture, structure and hygiene before the planting layer goes in.

Open Terrarium Plants

Quick Overview

Open terrarium plants for breathable glass displays

  • Best fit: open bowls, wide glass vessels, ventilated jars and displays with easy access.
  • Dry setups: Haworthia, Gasteria, compact Crassula, small cacti and Tillandsia need open airflow and careful watering.
  • Humid setups: small Peperomia, compact ferns and trailing tropical accents suit airy, lightly moist glass displays.
  • Substrate: use mineral-heavy layers for dry plants and airy moisture-holding mixes for tropical plants.
  • Watering: open glass dries faster than closed jars, but excess water still stays in the base if there is no drainage hole.
  • Light: succulent and cactus displays need brighter light than humid tropical glass plantings, without hot sun through glass.
  • Maintenance: keep plant bases clear, remove fallen leaves, avoid overcrowding and water according to plant type.
Details & Care

Open Terrarium Plants: glass displays with airflow and evaporation

Open terrariums are glass plantings without a sealed moisture cycle. Air moves freely, water evaporates and the vessel behaves more like a decorative container than a closed ecosystem. That makes open terrarium plants flexible, but also more dependent on correct watering, light and substrate. A shallow bowl in strong light, a tall vase with a narrow opening and a wide glass dish can all dry at different speeds.

The best plant choice depends on the style of open glass. Dry mineral displays suit succulents, small cacti and drought-tolerant plants when light is strong enough. Airy tropical displays suit compact foliage plants that enjoy some humidity but still need ventilation. Tillandsia can work in open glass because they take moisture through their leaves and need drying airflow after misting or soaking.

Main open-terrarium styles

  • Dry mineral bowls: use gritty substrate, strong light and plants that tolerate deeper drying, such as selected succulents or small cacti.
  • Airy tropical glass: choose compact Peperomia, small ferns or other small foliage plants where moisture can be controlled without sealing the vessel.
  • Tillandsia displays: keep plants loose or mounted so air reaches all sides and water does not sit trapped in the crown.
  • Mixed mini landscapes: combine plants only when their light and watering needs match; dry-climate and moisture-loving plants rarely share one setup well.
  • Wide openings: easier airflow and faster drying make care more forgiving than tall narrow vessels.

Open glass also gives easier access for grooming and adjustment. Dead leaves can be removed, plants can be rotated, and moisture can be corrected quickly. That makes open terrariums well suited to decorative plantings where the container is part of the display but the plants still need normal maintenance.

Care fit for open terrarium plants

Open terrariums need drainage planning because most glass vessels have no drainage hole. Use substrate depth carefully, water in small amounts and let the setup dry according to the plants inside. Succulent displays should dry more thoroughly between waterings, while tropical open displays may need lighter, more regular watering. Avoid soaking the whole base unless the plant group genuinely needs it and excess water can be removed.

Light matters as much as water. Succulent and cactus displays need a bright position or grow light, while small tropical foliage plants usually prefer bright indirect light. Direct sun can heat glass quickly and damage leaves or roots, especially in enclosed corners of the vessel. Choose open terrarium plants when you want a glass display with visible airflow, easier access for maintenance and more control over watering than a sealed terrarium.

Open terrarium planting also fits well when the design needs seasonal adjustment. Plants can be swapped, pruned or repositioned without disturbing a sealed system. That flexibility is well suited to gifts, desk displays and small decorative setups where the container matters visually but the plants still need ordinary care access.
