Aloe microstigma forms a dense rosette of blue-green to grey-green leaves scattered with small white spots. Reddish-brown teeth line the margins, and the thick tapering blades often acquire bronze or red tones as they age.
Young plants are usually solitary and relatively upright. Their leaves become longer, heavier and more outward-facing, eventually creating a broad rosette that may divide or form a short stem. The flower stalk is branched and commonly two-coloured: red buds open orange, while some populations instead produce uniformly red or uniformly yellow flowers. On a mature specimen, cool spotted foliage, warm marginal teeth and the red-to-orange flower spikes provide three separate layers of colour.
