Haworthiopsis limifolia, often called Fairy Washboard, forms a compact rosette of thick triangular leaves crossed by raised ridges. The ridges give each leaf a rough, washboard-like surface. The dark green leaves are firm because they store water inside the tissue.
The plant stays small in a pot and grows slowly. Over time, it may produce offsets around the base. Its shallow roots need air and regular drying periods between waterings.
In southern Africa, Haworthiopsis limifolia grows on rocky slopes and ground that dries between wet periods. The rosette stays low, and stored water carries the plant through dry spells.
In a pot, give it a full watering and then let the substrate dry. Constant moisture weakens the roots quickly, especially when temperatures are lower and light is weaker.
The firm leaf tips can press into skin, and chewing may irritate a pet’s mouth. Keep the rosette away from pets or children that bite plants. When separating offsets, work slowly so the fine roots stay attached.
Haworthiopsis refers to its similarity to Haworthia. The species name limifolia means “file-like leaves”, describing the rough ridged surface.
