Hypoestes phyllostachya 'White'

Where the species behind Hypoestes phyllostachya 'White' grows naturally

The natural home of Hypoestes phyllostachya is Madagascar, in warm tropical habitats with plentiful moisture.

Everyday Care Needs of Hypoestes phyllostachya 'White'

• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity supports smooth leaf edges and fresh new growth.
• Light: Position the plant in bright indirect light to keep the pale pattern clear.
• Compost: Use peat-free compost that keeps moisture around the roots and lets excess water escape.
• Water: Water thoroughly after the surface begins to dry, then keep the deeper compost evenly moist.
• Temperature: Aim for 12°C or warmer and keep cold draughts away.
• Pruning: Pinch long tips to build a dense shape and remove flower spikes if you want the plant to stay compact and leafy.
• Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid feed every two to three weeks while the plant is growing.
• Slower growth: This plant may slow down in cooler or dimmer conditions. Continue watering after the compost surface begins to dry, and hold feed until fresh growth becomes active again.
• Repotting: Move to fresh compost when roots are tightly packed or old compost becomes difficult to wet evenly.
• Propagation: Root stem cuttings or divide a well-established plant.

Stress and Pest Signs on Hypoestes phyllostachya 'White'

• White markings fade: The pale pattern becomes less distinct in low light. Brighter indirect light helps the pale pattern.
• Leaves curl or develop pale or scorched patches: Intense direct sun can stress the soft foliage. Filter the light at the window.
• Brown margins: Dry air and irregular watering can affect the edges. Raise humidity and water more consistently to prevent further browning.
• Soft yellow foliage: Compost that stays too wet can damage the roots. Allow the top layer to dry and check that the drainage holes are open.
• Cottony patches, sticky growth, fine webbing or white powder: Possible causes include mealybugs, aphids, spider mites or powdery mildew. Remove heavily affected leaves or shoots. Use a product labelled for the problem and follow the repeat timing on the label.

Hypoestes phyllostachya ‘White’ is non-toxic to cats and dogs

• This plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs.
• Its effects on people are unclear, so keep it away from young children who may chew it.
• Eating a large amount can still cause an upset stomach. Seek medical or veterinary advice if symptoms continue.

Hypoestes phyllostachya: where the name comes from

Hypoestes combines Greek hypo, meaning under, with estia, meaning house, referring to the bracts that shelter the flowers. The species epithet phyllostachya combines Greek phyllon, meaning leaf, with stachys, meaning spike, giving the sense “with a leaf spike”.

Robert Brown established the genus Hypoestes in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 474; Daniel Carl Solander had proposed the name.

John Gilbert Baker first described Hypoestes phyllostachya in 1887 in Journal of the Linnean Society, Botany, volume 22, page 511.
