Peperomia metallica 'Colombiana' is a small Peperomia grown for dark, velvet-textured leaves with a pale central stripe and red-toned undersides. The plant builds a dense pot from fleshy stems and closely spaced leaves, so its colour contrast stays visible even before it becomes a larger specimen.
The upper leaf surface is deep green to bronzy, while the reverse shows warmer red colour when the stems lean or new leaves open. This gives the plant a layered look from different angles, especially in bright filtered light where the central stripe catches the eye while the foliage stays protected from harsh sun.
Peperomia belongs to Piperaceae, the pepper family, a group with many tropical herbs and epiphytes. Peperomia metallica is an accepted species from wet tropical Peru, which supports warm indoor care, filtered light and a substrate that stays airy around the roots.
In cultivation, the name 'Colombiana' is used for a dark, red-backed Peperomia with velvet-textured leaves and a pale midrib. The plant’s care follows its small-rooted Peperomia habit: warmth, bright filtered light and careful watering matter more than frequent repotting or a large pot.
Like many Peperomia, this plant has fleshy stems but fine roots. That combination explains the care balance: the plant can tolerate a short dry interval, but it declines quickly in cold, stale, wet substrate.
Peperomia metallica 'Colombiana' is grown as an ornamental houseplant, not as food. Keep it away from pets and children that chew plants, and clear fallen leaves from the pot surface.
Peperomia comes from Greek roots meaning pepper-like, reflecting the genus’ place in Piperaceae. The species epithet metallica refers to a metallic quality, matching the reflective midrib effect seen on this dark-leaved Peperomia. 'Colombiana' is the cultivated name used for this red-backed plant.
Peperomia metallica 'Colombiana' has dark velvet-textured leaves, red leaf backs and a pale central stripe in a compact pot.
