Saxifraga stolonifera 'Variegata' is a trailing, stolon-forming plant with rounded leaves, pale variegated margins and red runners that carry small plantlets. The common name Strawberry Begonia refers to the runner habit; botanically, the plant belongs to Saxifragaceae.
The plant forms a low rosette at the base, then sends out slender stolons that can trail from a pot, shelf or hanging planter. These runners hang below the main crown and produce new plantlets along the way.
The main plant stays low while the runners extend outward and downward. Plantlets form along these stolons, giving the plant its strawberry-like growth pattern and a naturally trailing outline.
In shaded, moist, rocky habitats, this species grows with steady moisture and access to air around the roots. Indoors, the crown and runner bases need similar moisture without stagnant, dense substrate.
Keep Saxifraga stolonifera 'Variegata' away from pets and small children who may chew leaves or pull runners. The trailing stolons are delicate and can break if tugged.
Saxifraga stolonifera was published by Curtis in 1774 and belongs to Saxifragaceae. The epithet stolonifera refers to stolon-bearing growth, which matches the red runners and plantlets that define this variegated form.
