The natural leaf pattern of Hypoestes phyllostachya ranges from small contrasting spots to larger areas of colour. Through selection, growers developed forms in which red and rose cover most of the blade, leaving dark-green veins, margins and irregular islands. This is why many cultivated plants look more colour-blocked than the name polka-dot plant suggests.

‘Red’ is used across several commercial groups, so it describes a colour type rather than one cultivar. These plants descend from a soft-stemmed Madagascan species that grows beneath taller vegetation in the wet tropics.

Light and pruning for red polka-dot foliage

• Initial adjustment: Protect newly arrived foliage from abrupt sun and temperature changes. If drainage has failed, contact us before disturbing the roots.
• Light: Place Hypoestes ‘Red’ in bright indirect or softly filtered light. Insufficient light stretches the stems and makes new leaves greener; intense direct sun can leave pale, dry patches.
• Moisture: Water when the surface is beginning to lose moisture, keeping the interior lightly moist without leaving it saturated. Severe recurring wilting shortens the life of lower leaves.
• Watering and root care: Choose a moisture-retentive organic mix that still drains freely and does not compact around the fine roots.
• Temperature and humidity: Warm, steady and frost-free conditions suit the plant. Moderate humidity is useful, but continuously wet leaves and still air invite damage.
• Nutrition: Feed lightly during active growth. Excess fertiliser, especially high nitrogen, produces weak stems and can dull the red-green contrast.
• Renewal: Regular tip pinching keeps the plant branched. Older, open plants can be renewed easily from soft shoot cuttings kept warm while they root.

When something goes wrong

• Red colour fading: New growth becomes greener when light is insufficient or nitrogen is excessive. Move ‘Red’ to brighter filtered light and reduce heavy feeding; existing green leaves will not recolour fully.
• Stretched or bare stems: Age, shade and lack of tip pruning all contribute. Shorten healthy shoots above nodes so better-lit side growth can replace the open framework.
• Pale dry areas: Sharply defined patches on the light-facing side indicate direct-sun injury. Remove the harsh exposure and retain damaged leaves while they still contribute useful green tissue.
• Wilting or crisp edges: Drought, salts and failing wet roots can all interrupt water supply. Check moisture through the root ball and the firmness of the roots before deciding to water.
• Yellow soft foliage in wet mix: The roots are beginning to struggle for air. Drain the pot fully and water less often.
• Natural pattern or pest damage: Red fields and green patches are stable colouring. Fine pale specks with webbing suggest mites; cottony clusters suggest mealybugs, and insects gathering on tips may be aphids or whiteflies. Isolate before control.
• Spreading spots or mildew: Keep leaves dry, improve circulation and remove heavily affected tissue. An irregular coating that expands is disease, not part of the red-green pattern.

How did Hypoestes phyllostachya get its name?

Hypoestes combines Greek hypo, meaning under, with estia, meaning house, referring to the bracts that shelter the flowers. The species epithet phyllostachya combines Greek phyllon, meaning leaf, with stachys, meaning spike, giving the sense “with a leaf spike”.

Robert Brown established the genus Hypoestes in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 474; Daniel Carl Solander had proposed the name.

John Gilbert Baker first described Hypoestes phyllostachya in 1887 in Journal of the Linnean Society, Botany, volume 22, page 511.
