Fittonia albivenis 'Joly Josan Red'

The cultivar’s horticultural background

Among a crop of ‘Josan’ nerve plants, a spontaneous branch mutation appeared at Haaren, the Netherlands, in 2002. The newcomer carried a denser network of crimson veins and flatter, less-rippled leaf edges. Both differences remained consistent in later cuttings.

The name ‘Joly Josan Red’ identifies this member of Fittonia albivenis. Its wild relatives form creeping mats beneath the rainforest canopy in northern and western South America, far from the Dutch nursery where the cultivar arose.

Care for compact foliage growth

Temperature, humidity and watering: Soft growth on the plant can mark or collapse quickly in cold, dry air. After delivery, restore warmth gradually and avoid an abrupt fall in humidity while the soft foliage recovers from transport. Use bright filtered light to support the dense red venation, since harsh direct sun damages the thin leaf surface.

Watering and root care: Use a small container and a moisture-retentive mix with enough coarse material to keep oxygen around the roots. Water before the root ball dries through and let the excess leave completely. Repeated dramatic wilting is stressful rather than a harmless signal, while a continuously sodden base can rot stems and roots.

Leaf care, propagation and feeding: Pinch or trim stems to maintain the spreading shape and remove old or weakened growth cleanly. Tip cuttings from healthy red-veined shoots retain the same cultivated markings. Give a weak balanced fertiliser as fresh leaves appear, and move up only one pot size when the roots require it.

What can go wrong

Rapid flopping with a dry, light pot is drought stress and usually responds to a thorough watering. Collapse above wet soil, soft stems or discoloured roots points to rot. Let excess water drain so air can return around the roots, and remove dying material instead of keeping the base continuously wet.

Grey mould begins as water-soaked damage and develops fuzzy grey growth where leaves remain damp and air is still. Open the centre of the plant, remove affected foliage and allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings without letting the root ball collapse.

The strong red venation is normal. Diffuse yellowing, translucent patches or margins that become crisp are separate stress patterns linked to roots, cold, sun, salts or low humidity. Use the texture and distribution of the damage rather than the colour alone.

Mites produce fine stippling and mealybugs form white clusters around nodes. Cold transport or draught exposure can leave dark patches without insects. Inspect first, then restore warmth steadily or treat the identified pest.

How did Fittonia albivenis get its name?

Fittonia commemorates Elizabeth and Sarah Mary Fitton. Albivenis combines Latin albus, meaning white, with vena, meaning vein.

Henri Eugène Lucien Gaëtan Coemans established the genus Fittonia in 1865 in Journal Général d’Horticulture, volume 15, page 185.

John Gould Veitch first described it as Adelaster albivenis in 1861 in Gardeners’ Chronicle, volume 1861, page 499; John Lindley had proposed that name. Richard Kenneth Brummitt later placed it in Fittonia as Fittonia albivenis in 1979 in Botanical Magazine, volume 182, page 165.
