Hypoestes phyllostachya comes from Madagascar’s wet-tropical vegetation, where it grows as a soft-stemmed plant beneath taller vegetation. Spots and blotches vary naturally within the species. Generations of selection enlarged this variation into the broad pink, red, rose and white fields seen in modern cultivated plants.
