‘Green Fantasy’ is a compact cultivated selection of Nephrolepis exaltata, recognised by its robust habit and heavily ruffled fronds divided into several layers. It belongs to the wider Boston-fern and sword-fern group.

The species behind it is the American sword fern, which ranges through tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas. Wild plants grow in moist forests, palm hammocks and floodplain vegetation, either rooted in the ground or growing on trees and palms.

Moisture and airflow for fern care

Dense-crown care: The ruffled fronds of the plant retain moisture and debris more readily than an open sword fern. Keep the nursery pot and substrate unchanged for time to settle after delivery.

Light: Bright filtered light maintains the compact, strongly ruffled form. Hot direct sun can bleach the exposed foliage, while dim conditions produce longer, looser new fronds with less pronounced ruffling.

Water and soil: Keep the root ball consistently moist but aerated. Check below the surface and near the centre because the crown can remain wet while the outer edge feels dry.

Temperature, support and humidity: Warm conditions steady warmth and humid air support its dense mass of ruffled fronds, provided ventilation remains good. Preserve the cultivar through division or rooted runners, since spore-grown offspring can vary.

• Even ruffling: Strong, repeated ruffling across healthy green fronds belongs to ‘Green Fantasy’. One distorted flush with silver scars, black specks or uneven collapse is more consistent with injury or thrips than with the cultivar's normal form.
• Sori in the folds: Regularly positioned dots beneath fertile leaflets are spore structures. Look closely when the dense folds obscure them; moving insects, webbing, cotton or irregular shields are different findings.
• Crisp outer leaflets: A light, dry root ball supports water deficit. Rehydrate evenly and check the pot before the whole mass dries, while avoiding repeated small amounts that leave the dense centre inconsistently wet.
• Yellow fronds with a wet centre: The outer surface may feel dry while the middle remains saturated. Probe more than one point, empty any runoff and pause watering if the middle is still wet. If fronds become limp or the crown starts to soften, check that the pot drains freely and remove trapped dead debris.
• Pale exposed sections: Bleaching on the side facing direct sun indicates excessive exposure. Return the fern to bright filtered light; the next growth should retain colour when the light change is corrected.
• Pests or decay inside the crown: Mites, scale and mealybugs can escape notice among the ruffles, while trapped wet debris can encourage spotting. Separate the fern, remove fully dead material and inspect the inner crown before choosing treatment.
