Peperomia caperata 'Cayenne' is a warm-toned ripple peperomia with crinkled leaves in red, bronze and deep green shades. It stays close to the pot, building a dense clump of small, heart-shaped leaves rather than stretching into a trailing plant. The colour sits deepest in the grooves, so the foliage looks darker and richer as the leaves mature.
'Cayenne' does not need a large container to look established; it needs a steady root zone, bright filtered light and warmth. The leaves hold some moisture, but the roots are fine and sensitive to cold, wet conditions.
Peperomia caperata comes from south-eastern Brazil and grows as a small perennial in wet tropical conditions. Indoors, 'Cayenne' keeps the species’ rippled leaf texture but adds a darker, warmer colour range. New leaves may open with a slightly different tone before settling into deeper bronze-red and green.
The plant grows from short stems packed close together. This dense habit means the crown should stay airy and clean, especially after watering. A potting mix that holds light moisture while still letting oxygen reach the roots gives better results than rich, compact compost.
Peperomia caperata is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant out of reach of pets that bite houseplants often, as chewed leaves can still cause mild stomach upset.
The genus name Peperomia means pepper-like, reflecting its relationship to Piperaceae. The species name caperata means wrinkled and refers to the puckered leaf surface that defines ripple peperomias.
Peperomia caperata 'Cayenne' grows as a compact ripple Peperomia with warm red, bronze and green leaf tones.
