Plants for Part Shade
For cooler sites with filtered light, morning sun, or bright shade. Use this group to avoid heat-stress plants in exposed positions, then pick by soil moisture and the level of summer drought your planting can handle.

About Our Filters
Filters help you narrow things down fast and without guessing. We put a lot of time and effort into keeping filter values consistent across the shop by cross-checking references and validating them against real-world indoor growing and handling.
Use them as guidance, not guarantees. Homes vary a lot, so for the full context (and any exceptions), open the product page and read the description.
How filtering works
- Filters stack: each selection narrows results.
- Multiple picks in one filter are usually either/or within that filter.
- Undo anytime: click a selected option again (or clear filters).
Safety
- Non-toxic: not known for relevant chemical toxicity for common pets (chewing can still cause irritation).
- Non-toxic & Pet Friendly: stricter shortlist that also avoids many physical hazards like spines, sharp tips, thorns, and bristles.
Common care filters
- Light level: Low indirect → Full sun/direct.
- Water Needs: Low / Medium / High.
- Humidity Level: Normal (40–50%) / Moist (50–60%) / Humid (60–80%+).
Growth & size
- Growth Habit: climbing, trailing, crawling, upright, self-heading, clumping, rosette.
- Needs support? none / optional / needed.
- Delivered size: pot size + plant height at shipping.
- Max size indoors: realistic long-term height + spread indoors.

Plants for Part Shade
Quick Overview
- Part shade can be bright, just cooler and less intense than all day sun.
- Soil moisture usually decides success more than light level alone.
- Morning sun plus afternoon shade suits many leafy plants and flowering shrubs.
- Shade that stays damp can raise mildew risk, so airflow and spacing matter.
- Containers in part shade dry slower, so watering needs a lighter hand.
- Slugs and snails are common in cooler beds, especially in spring.
- A mulch layer helps hold steady moisture without keeping the soil soggy.
Details & Care
Part shade is a softer light zone
Plants for part shade suit bright positions with limited direct sun, morning sun, dappled light or shade during the hottest part of the day. These sites often stay cooler and hold moisture longer than exposed full-sun beds.
Part shade is not the same as darkness. Most plants in this group still need enough ambient light to grow compactly, flower or hold good colour.
- Morning sun: Often gentle enough for plants that scorch or wilt in afternoon heat.
- Dappled shade: Open tree canopies or light shrub cover can create a stable growing site.
- Wall shade: Check how long the area stays dark and whether rain reaches the soil.
- Container shade: Pots dry more slowly, so drainage still matters.
Moisture and airflow
Cooler shaded sites can help plants avoid heat stress, but dense shade and poor airflow may keep leaves wet after rain. Space plants so air can move, and water the soil directly where possible.
Where part-shade plants fit
- Under shrubs: Use plants that handle root competition and seasonal shade.
- Courtyards: Choose plants that enjoy bright reflected light without harsh sun.
- Balconies: Part-shade plants suit east-facing or sheltered positions.
- Woodland-style beds: Layer lower plants around ferns, shrubs and spring growth.
Part-shade planting is strongest when light, moisture and airflow are checked together, not treated as one simple shade label.
A bed under deciduous trees may be bright in spring, shaded in summer and open again in winter. Walls and fences can also shift shade as the sun angle changes. Watch the site over a day before deciding whether it is truly part shade or almost full shade.
Plants with softer leaves often appreciate part shade, but they still need enough light and airflow to avoid weak growth.
Part-shade planting also needs realistic watering. Cooler light can reduce evaporation, but tree roots, walls and covered balconies may keep soil surprisingly dry.
Use these plants where full-sun choices fade, scorch or demand too much water, but true shade plants would grow weak.

Everything arrived in good condition and very well packed - it wasn't easy with a fragile plant and a heavy bag of substrate. I recommend it!
