The background of Peperomia ‘Eden Rosso’

‘Eden Rosso’ was bred by Obed Smit in Sappemeer, the Netherlands. It came from a 2010 cross between Peperomia marmorata and Peperomia metallica and was selected for its growth habit, leaf colour and distinctive leaf shape.

‘Eden Rosso’ is a hybrid between two Peperomia species. P. marmorata is native to southeastern Brazil, while P. metallica is native to Peru; both occur in wet tropical habitats.

Keeping Peperomia ‘Eden Rosso’ healthy indoors

• Light: A bright position out of strong direct sun helps ‘Eden Rosso’ keep its low, compact form. Weak light loosens the growth, while intense sun can bleach or scorch the ridged leaves.
• Watering: Let the potting mix partly dry before watering again. Once the top of the mix is dry and the pot feels lighter, water thoroughly and let it drain. The fleshy foliage can handle a short dry spell.
• Humidity: Standard indoor humidity is normally enough. If the air is exceptionally dry, slightly higher humidity can help. Keep the leaf surfaces dry and maintain good air movement.
• Potting mix: Use a loose, slightly acidic mix that drains quickly. Bark, perlite or pumice help the mix drain while keeping air around the roots.
• Temperature: Maintain a warm room at roughly 18–30 °C, away from cold glass, draughts and strong heat sources.
• Feeding: While the plant is actively growing new leaves, a half-strength balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks is sufficient. Feed less when growth slows.
• Repotting: ‘Eden Rosso’ can remain slightly snug in its container. Move it to a pot only a little larger once the roots fill the pot or appear at the drainage holes.
• Grooming: Remove spent flower spikes and damaged leaves cleanly at their bases. It needs little pruning beyond removing weak or damaged growth.

Problems and solutions for Peperomia ‘Eden Rosso’

• Leaves turn yellow, soften and drop: First check whether the mix is staying wet around the roots. Pause watering and check the roots; remove any black or mushy roots with clean, disinfected tools before repotting if necessary. Discard rotten material and follow the steps in our root rot guide.
• The low rosette opens and stems lengthen: Too little light is the likely reason. Shift it gradually into brighter filtered light; future growth should be more compact, but existing stretched sections will remain long.
• Crisp beige patches on the upper leaf surface: Strong direct light can scorch the raised portions of the leaf. Move the plant out of harsh sun and increase light gradually.
• Brown tips on otherwise firm leaves: Peperomia can react to fluoride in tap water, accumulated fertiliser salts or uneven moisture. Try rainwater or filtered water, avoid heavy feeding and keep watering more consistent without leaving the mix constantly damp.
• Cottony white material along leaf stalks or leaf bases: Check these clusters closely for mealybugs. Isolate the plant, remove visible pests, then apply a suitable labelled treatment and repeat according to its stated interval until the infestation has stopped. See our mealybug guide.
