Dutch Breeding with Brazilian and Peruvian Ancestry

Dutch breeder Obed Jacob Smit created ‘Eden Rosso’ in Sappemeer in 2010 by crossing Peperomia marmorata with Peperomia metallica.

Its parents connect the cultivar to two parts of South America: Peperomia marmorata is native to southeastern Brazil, while Peperomia metallica is native to Peru. ‘Eden Rosso’ originated in cultivation in the Netherlands and does not occur as a wild plant.

Care for compact foliage growth

• Water: Water thoroughly when the upper layer has dried and the pot feels noticeably lighter. Let excess water escape, and avoid keeping the centre of the rosette wet.
• Humidity: Average indoor humidity is suitable, with normal air circulation around the rosette.
• Light: Bright, indirect light suits the plant best. Soft early or late sun is suitable after gradual exposure; protect the deeply coloured leaves from intense midday sun.
• Substrate and pot: Use a small pot with drainage and a loose blend of houseplant mix, fine bark and perlite or pumice. Repot only when roots have filled the container, moving up one size.
• Feeding: Apply a low-dose balanced fertiliser while new leaves are forming. Pause feeding when growth stops or the substrate stays wet for longer.

Peperomia ‘Eden Rosso’ Problems and Solutions

• A soft centre releases its leaves: Check the crown, stem base and fine roots. If the roots are firm but the mix is still wet, let it dry for longer. Remove dark soft roots or crown tissue, then place the remaining firm rooted section in fresh airy mix and keep water out of the centre while it stabilises.
• Wrinkled or limp leaves: Lift the pot and feel the mix before watering. A dry root ball needs a thorough soak, while limp leaves over damp mix point to roots that are no longer supplying water and need inspection.
• Raised blisters or corky marks: This is likely oedema, a water-balance problem that can develop when roots stay wet during cool conditions or weak airflow. Let more of the mix dry, maintain steady warmth and improve airflow. Existing corky scars will remain.
• Pale, tan or crisp patches: Check if the damage faces strong sun, cold glass or a recent spray. Move the plant out of strong sun or away from cold glass. If a spray is suspected, do not use it again. Damaged tissue will not recover, so look for healthy new leaves.
• Long leaf stalks and an open rosette: Move the plant closer to bright filtered light in stages and turn the pot so the crown is lit evenly. Existing leaf stalks will stay long, but new leaves should form closer to the centre.
• Silvery scars, black specks or twisted new leaves: Look inside the folded crown and around flower spikes for thrips. Isolate the plant, remove badly affected growth and follow an indoor-use treatment label that lists thrips.
• Cottony wax, sticky leaves or fixed brown bumps: Check bases of the leaf stalks and leaf undersides for mealybugs or scale insects. Remove visible insects, identify which pest is present and follow the label for that pest; continue inspecting hidden folds after treatment.

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.

The meaning and history of Peperomia

Peperomia combines Greek peperi, “pepper”, with homoios, “resembling”, and means “pepper-like”.
