Support needs for climbing plants

  • Climbing method: attaching roots, twining stems and tendrils need different supports.
  • Presentation: loose vines, trailing pots and trained plants.
  • Vertical reach: current stem length and mature height shape the space needed.

Support needs of climbing houseplants

Climbing houseplants extend through stems, nodes and aerial roots. Philodendron, Monstera, Epipremnum, Scindapsus and other vines often develop larger leaves as they gain height on a stable support. Stem thickness, attachment style and mature leaf size guide the choice of pole, plank or trellis. Several vines cover a support more broadly near the base, while one strong leader produces a defined vertical line.

A secure support and stable pot carry increasing weight as the plant matures. Textured surfaces give aerial roots the attachment points associated with epiphytic growth. For species that root from stems, leaves or divisions, see the propagation guide. The aroid substrate guide explains how bark, mineral particles and fibres affect the root zone.
