Hoya crassipetiolata âSplash Round Leafâ pairs thick, rounded foliage with generous silver splashing, creating a dense, sculptural look on each vine. Leaves feel firm and slightly glossy, with irregular metallic flecks that catch the light and make this clone stand out from standard green forms.
This semi-compact climber works just as well on rings and trellises as it does in hanging pots, where the round leaves form soft cascades. Supplied as a rooted plug in a ca. 2 cm pot, approximately 10â15 cm tall, it establishes quickly in bright indoor conditions and rewards patient care with fragrant star-shaped blooms.
Wild Hoya crassipetiolata occurs in humid forests of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, where it grows epiphytically on mossy branches. There it receives bright but filtered light, constant airflow and frequent short wet periods followed by quick drying.
âSplash Round Leafâ keeps this basic growth pattern in cultivation: compact, climbing stems with noticeably thick petioles and leaves that sit close together along the vine. Recreating its woodland canopy environment â bright indirect light, airy substrate and even moisture â produces dense foliage and reliable blooming.
Provide bright, indirect light near an east or bright north-facing window, or a slightly shaded spot by a south/west window. Short periods of gentle morning or late-afternoon sun are fine; harsh midday rays behind glass can mark the pale splash areas.
Let the top 2â3 cm of substrate dry before watering again. Water thoroughly until excess drains out, then allow the pot to dry down lightly. Constantly wet or compact soil is the quickest route to root problems.
Aim for 50â70 % relative humidity for steady, even growth. It tolerates typical room humidity if watering is well controlled and air is not stagnant.
Best kept between 18â26 °C. Brief dips a little lower are tolerated if soil is on the dry side, but prolonged exposure below 15 °C will slow growth and stress roots.
Use a loose, airy mix that drains quickly, for example a blend of fine orchid bark, perlite or pumice, coco chips and a small portion of compost or coco coir. The goal is high oxygen around the roots, not water retention.
Feed lightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4â6 weeks during active growth. Flush with clear water from time to time to avoid salt build-up that can brown leaf tips.
Guide vines onto a ring, arch or slim trellis to show off the round leaves and keep growth compact. Prune only to manage length and shape â avoid cutting peduncles, as flower spurs rebloom from the same points.
Take 2-node stem cuttings and root in moist sphagnum, perlite or semi-hydro media. Warm temperatures and moderate humidity usually produce roots within a few weeks.
Compared with standard crassipetiolata forms, âSplash Round Leafâ has shorter, rounder leaves and a more compact framework, giving it a softer, fuller look on rings and hanging pots. Silver splashing varies from leaf to leaf, so each plant develops its own pattern over time.
The thick petioles and dense leaf spacing give this clone a distinctly architectural feel, while the moderate growth speed keeps it manageable even in smaller spaces. Once established, it performs well in both organic mixes and semi-hydro setups, provided roots are given plenty of air.
Hoya crassipetiolata was formally described in 2013 and belongs to the Apocynaceae family. The species name combines Latin crassus (âthickâ) and petiolus (âleaf stalkâ), highlighting the noticeably thick petioles that characterise this group.
âSplash Round Leafâ is an informal horticultural name used for this silver-splashed, round-leaved clone. âSplashâ refers to the irregular silvery flecks across the leaf surface, while âRound Leafâ points to the broader, more circular leaf shape compared with standard elongated forms.
With rounded, silver-splashed foliage and compact climbing vines, Hoya crassipetiolata âSplash Round Leafâ is an easy way to add structure and subtle shimmer to your indoor jungle.
Choose a bright spot, give it an airy mix and a simple support, and let this quietly dramatic Hoya become a long-term centerpiece in your collection.
