Monstera obliqua (Suriname)

Origin of Monstera obliqua (Suriname)

Monstera obliqua occurs naturally from Costa Rica through northern and tropical South America and Trinidad, including Suriname. It grows as a slender climber or creeper in wet tropical habitat.

“Suriname” is the locality name used for this cultivated form. Its exact wild population within Suriname remains undocumented.

Growing Monstera obliqua (Suriname)

Give the plant bright filtered light and steady temperatures around 18–25 °C. Avoid prolonged temperatures below 10 °C. Aim for high humidity around 60–80% for the thin leaves, with gentle airflow. A fine support or smooth rooting panel lets the slender stem attach without rough handling.

Keep the root zone evenly moist without allowing prolonged saturation. Let only the upper zone begin to dry before watering again, and use an airy mix that can hold some moisture without becoming dense or stagnant.

Use a light balanced feed while new leaves and roots are actively developing.

Move to a wider container when the stem is actively creeping across the mix and approaches the rim, or when the roots crowd the pot. Keep the creeping stem at the surface of the fresh mix.

Layer runners before cutting so each new section already has roots when separated.

Health checks for Monstera obliqua (Suriname)

• Edges crisp or the whole leaf loses firmness quickly: thin tissue reacts fast to dry roots, hot air or low humidity. If the mix is drying hard, shorten the interval slightly; if the roots are still moist, move the plant away from hot airflow and raise ambient humidity while keeping gentle air movement.
• Leaves yellow while the root ball remains saturated: oxygen shortage or root loss may be involved. Improve drainage and inspect persistent decline; keep firm roots and remove only tissue that is fully soft or hollow. Use the root rot guide if damage is confirmed.
• A leaf stays entire or only lightly perforated: this is not automatically a problem because M. obliqua is naturally variable. If the leaf is otherwise firm and healthy, no corrective action is needed.
• Silvery scarring or fine stippling appears: Silvery scarring with black specks indicates thrips, while fine pale stippling with webbing indicates spider mites. Inspect new leaves closely for these signs. If you confirm thrips or spider mites, isolate the plant and rinse hardened foliage on both sides. Apply a treatment labelled for the confirmed pest to the new leaves and undersides, then repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course. Continue checking until new foliage remains clean.

Monstera obliqua (Suriname) is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Where does the name Monstera obliqua come from?

Monstera comes from Latin monstrum or monstrosus, words for something unusual or abnormally formed, referring to the striking holes and divisions in the leaves. Obliqua means oblique or slanting.

Michel Adanson established the genus Monstera in 1763 in Familles des plantes, volume 2, page 470.

Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel first described Monstera obliqua in 1845 in Linnaea, volume 18, page 79.
