Hoya verticillata ranges widely from South and Southeast Asia into Malesia. N-Splash is a silver-marked cultivated form.

Guide each soft runner onto support as it appears; delayed bending can crack a stem once it firms. Leave enough space between loops for the oval leaves.

Bright filtered light keeps this Hoya growing compactly without exposing the dark leaves to abrupt heat. Silver coverage is genetic and will still vary between leaves.

Checking moisture

Feel below the surface and lift the pot before watering. When the upper root zone has dried, soak the plant evenly and empty the saucer.

Substrate and nutrition

Combine coarse bark, mineral particles and a small moisture-holding component. Use dilute complete fertiliser during new stem extension and replace compacted mix when drainage slows.

Temperature

Use steady indoor warmth as the normal range for this dark, silver-splashed vine. Avoid cold windows and trapped heat.

A searching shoot can run before branching, but repeated bare nodes with smaller dark, silver-splashed leaves suggest root or light stress. Secure the shoot, inspect the roots and brighten the position gradually if they are firm.

Look for concentrated sun or heat at glass. Move the vine into softer light and check the next leaves because marked tissue will not recover.

Yellowing starts inside the vine

Check if the shaded centre of the pot is staying wet. Improve drainage and examine the roots if several inner leaves change together.

How did Hoya verticillata get its name?

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. Verticillata means whorled.

Robert Brown established the genus Hoya in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 459.

Martin Vahl first described it as Sperlingia verticillata in 1810 in Skrifter af Naturhistorie-Selskabet, volume 6, page 113. George Don later placed it in Hoya as Hoya verticillata in 1837 in A General History of the Dichlamydeous Plants, volume 4, page 128.
