History and background of Hoya archboldiana

Hoya archboldiana grows on trees in the wet tropical forests of New Guinea, including the Aru Islands. Cecil Norman described the species in 1937.

A simple care guide for Hoya archboldiana

Give the climbing stems a firmly anchored, sturdy support. Choose bright indirect light; gentle morning sun is suitable, with protection from hot midday sun. Keep the plant warm and above about 14°C. Raise humidity in dry air with a humidifier, while allowing gentle ventilation around the foliage.

Use a very porous mix containing organic material and coarse bark, in a pot with drainage holes. During growth, water when the pot is lighter and the deeper mix is lightly moist, wetting the root ball and draining fully. When growth slows, let the mix become fairly dry between waterings, without drying it completely.

New leaves are a useful sign to start feeding. Use houseplant fertiliser at the label’s concentration and frequency, pausing when growth stops. Check the root ball before choosing a larger pot. If roots fill the pot and the mix dries unusually quickly, repot into the next size.

Take a two- or three-node stem cutting with a clean, sharp tool, wearing gloves because the sap can irritate skin. Root a leafless lower node in moist perlite in a container with drainage holes, at about 26–28°C. Keep the leaves above the perlite and check moisture regularly. Once rooted, transfer to a small pot of airy mix.

Understanding common problems with Hoya archboldiana

• Yellowing and persistent wilting in wet mix: Persistent wetness can damage roots. Drain trapped water and inspect roots if decline continues. If you find a small amount of root rot, use a clean, disinfected tool to cut the soft roots back to firm, healthy tissue. Throw away the rotten roots and old mix. Repot in fresh, airy mix, using a clean pot just large enough for the roots that remain. The pot must have drainage holes. If decay is widespread, save only healthy stem cuttings. Discard the plant if no healthy stems remain, and disinfect your tools afterwards.
• Rapid wilting with water-soaked leaves after cold exposure: Chilling can damage leaves and stems, especially beside cold glass or in a draught. Move the plant to a stable, warmer position above about 14°C. Check the mix before watering; a chilled plant may use water more slowly. Remove only tissue that is clearly dead or decaying.
• White cottony wax in stem joints: Confirm mealybugs beneath the wax and isolate the plant. Remove visible insects with a damp swab or tweezers. Inspect sheltered leaf joints, stems, the pot and any support weekly, removing any mealybugs you find until none remain. If mealybugs persist, use a product approved for home use against mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants in your country. Follow the label for how much to use, where to apply it, when to repeat treatment and all safety precautions.

Why is it called Hoya archboldiana?

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. Hoya archboldiana commemorates American explorer and naturalist Richard Archbold, whose expeditions expanded knowledge of New Guinea’s flora and fauna.
