Background of 'Silver Hero' and where S. pictus grows

'Silver Hero' is a cultivated form of Scindapsus pictus known for its pale silver-grey foliage. The species grows naturally in southeastern Bangladesh and Thailand, on the Malay Peninsula, and across Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi and the Philippines. In the wild it climbs through wet tropical forest.

How to grow 'Silver Hero'

• Support: Start 'Silver Hero' on a textured board, pole or trellis so its short climbing roots can grip as the stem matures.
• Watering: Wait until the top of the mix is dry and the pot feels noticeably lighter, then water thoroughly and let the pot drain fully.
• Light: Give the whole vine bright filtered light so the pale foliage receives even light.
• Temperature: Warm indoor conditions around 18–29°C suit S. pictus.
• Humidity: Typical room humidity suits 'Silver Hero'. Keep light air movement around the pale foliage.
• Potting mix: Use a loose, free-draining mix with bark or coarse coco chips and pumice or perlite.
• Feeding: Feed with a balanced fertiliser as directed on the label while the plant is growing. When new leaves stop appearing, wait to feed again until growth returns.
• Repotting and propagation: Repot when roots fill the container or drainage slows. For propagation, take a stem cutting with a healthy leaf joint (node) and root it in warm, lightly moist mix.

Signs of trouble on 'Silver Hero'

• Brown or grey spots stand out across the pale silver-grey leaves: Remove affected leaves, keep the foliage dry during watering and improve gentle airflow. Isolate the vine and watch new leaves for fresh spotting.
• Pale lower leaves yellow while the potting mix remains wet: Inspect the roots. With a clean, disinfected tool, cut away decayed roots until only firm, healthy roots remain. Discard the removed roots and repot in fresh, free-draining potting mix.
• Grey-brown wilted areas appear after cold transport or a cold draught: Place it somewhere warm where the room temperature stays steady. Check the pot before watering again; the top of the potting mix should be dry and the pot noticeably lighter. Remove leaves that turn fully brown, dry or soft.
• Fine pale speckles, webbing, scraped or silvery marks, scale-like bumps or cottony deposits appear: Check for mites, thrips, scale and mealybugs. Isolate the plant. Use a treatment labelled for the pest you identify on indoor plants and follow the repeat instructions on the label.

Scindapsus comes from the ancient Greek plant name skindapsos. The Latin adjective pictus means painted, decorated or coloured, referring to the patterned foliage of the species.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Scindapsus in 1832 in Meletemata Botanica, page 21.

Justus Carl Hasskarl first described Scindapsus pictus in 1842 in Tijdschrift voor Natuurlijke Geschiedenis en Physiologie, volume 9, page 164.
