Hoya lacunosa ‘Bruno Tricolor’ is a striking variegated selection within the Hoya lacunosa group, cherished for compact trailing vines, soft fragrance, and unique three-tone foliage. Likely a horticultural offshoot of Hoya lacunosa or a close hybrid such as H. krohniana × lacunosa, this cultivar brings rich ornamental contrast and easy indoor adaptability – a collectible variety that stays neat, colourful, and low-maintenance.
New leaves open blush-pink and fade through creamy ivory to mint and deep green, creating a constantly shifting gradient along the vines. Leaves are slightly convex, textured, and densely arranged on compact stems that rarely exceed 1 m in length.
As plants mature, they develop a softly cascading habit that works beautifully in hanging planters, on shelves, or on narrow trellises, without becoming unruly.
When established, Hoya lacunosa ‘Bruno Tricolor’ produces clusters of small, fuzzy, star-shaped flowers in white to cream with yellowish centres. Each umbel carries around 15–20 blooms that release a sweet, vanilla-like scent, strongest in the evening hours.
Under stable indoor conditions, flowering can repeat several times a year from the same peduncles, so these should never be removed.
Hoya lacunosa originates from tropical Southeast Asia – mainly Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia – where it grows epiphytically on trees in warm, humid forests. ‘Bruno Tricolor’ is a horticultural form selected for vivid variegation and compact growth, retaining the species’ ease of culture while offering a rare colour mix among Hoyas.
Bright, indirect light keeps the tricolour pattern vibrant. Too little light slows growth and mutes pink tones; strong midday sun can scorch pale areas.
Let the substrate dry roughly halfway before watering again. Roots prefer air over constant moisture, especially in dense mixes.
Use a fast-draining mix with bark, perlite, or pumice. Hoya lacunosa ‘Bruno Tricolor’ also performs well in mineral or semi-hydro substrates when moisture is kept even and oxygen around roots is high.
Ideal humidity is around 50–70 %. Consistent airflow supports healthy roots and flowers and reduces the risk of fungal issues.
Best grown between 18–28 °C. Protect from cold drafts and prolonged exposure below 15 °C.
Apply a balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks in small doses during active growth. Light, regular feeding helps maintain colour and supports flowering.
Trim long vines to shape and encourage branching, but never cut off flower spurs (peduncles), as new umbels form from them.
Propagation is simple from node cuttings. Root one- or two-node segments in water, perlite, or sphagnum; roots often appear within about two weeks in warm conditions.
Hoya lacunosa ‘Bruno Tricolor’ adapts well to both organic and inert substrates, thriving even in smaller pots (10–14 cm). Slow to moderate growth and flexible vines make it ideal for shelves or hanging displays in bright indoor spaces.
The cultivar is generally considered non-toxic to pets and humans, though, like all Hoyas, it produces latex sap that should not be ingested and may irritate sensitive skin.
The species name lacunosa comes from the Latin lacuna, meaning “small hollow,” referring to the slightly sunken texture between veins on the leaf surface.
Hoya lacunosa ‘Bruno Tricolor’ unites compact form, richly variegated leaves, and sweet, fragrant blooms in a single easy-care houseplant. With steady light, light feeding, and patience, it rewards growers year-round with a soft cascade of colour and scent.
Bring home Hoya lacunosa ‘Bruno Tricolor’ to add vibrant contrast, gentle fragrance, and lasting charm to any indoor plant collection.
