Philodendron genevieveanum

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron genevieveanum

Philodendron genevieveanum is native to Colombia. In Antioquia it has been recorded at around 500 m in humid tropical forest.

Care for Philodendron genevieveanum indoors

• Support: Guide the climbing stem onto a stable pole, plank or trellis early enough for the plant to attach and stay stable.
• Handling: Do not scrub the pale scales from the leaf stalks; they are a normal part of the plant.
• Light: Bright indirect light suits the species. Protect the leaves from strong direct sun, especially after moving the plant to a brighter position.
• Humidity and airflow: Aim for 50–60% humidity, with airflow around the scaly leaf stalks and old stem fibres.
• Water: Keep moisture reasonably even, letting the upper layer dry before the next thorough watering. Avoid both a constantly wet pot and repeated severe drying.
• Potting mix: Use a very chunky, free-draining mix with plenty of bark. Water should move through the pot easily and drain away quickly.
• Temperature: Normal growth suits 18–29 °C. Prolonged temperatures below 15 °C are too cool.
• Feeding: During active stem extension, give complete houseplant fertiliser sparingly; then reduce feeding as growth slows.
• Repotting: Repot the plant when root space becomes tight or the pot no longer holds the plant and its support securely. Use only a modest increase in pot size and make sure the support remains firmly anchored.
• Propagation: Propagate from a healthy stem section with at least one node, keeping any pre-existing aerial root.

Philodendron genevieveanum problems and solutions

• Pale scales and brown fibres remain attached: These are normal parts of the plant. Leave them in place unless you see clear signs of pests or rot.
• White cottony clusters appear between the scales: Check for mealybugs and sticky residue. If pests are present, isolate the plant, remove visible insects and use a suitable houseplant treatment, following the label.
• Leaves yellow and the mix smells stale or sour: The pot may be staying wet for too long. Improve drainage and, if the plant keeps declining, check the roots and remove only rotten roots.
• A new leaf sticks or scars as it opens: Very dry air or uneven watering can interfere with unfurling. Keep moisture steadier, raise humidity moderately and let the leaf open without pulling it free.

Philodendron genevieveanum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

When was Philodendron genevieveanum first published, and what does it mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” Genevieveanum commemorates Geneviève Ferry of the botanical garden in Nancy; her flowering plant helped make the species description possible.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Thomas Bernard Croat first described Philodendron genevieveanum in 2013 in Aroideana, volume 36E, issue 1, page 38.
