A shingling Dischidia, Dischidia imbricata grows with fleshy, kidney-shaped leaves that overlap along the stems like small tiles. The leaves can press close to cork or bark, forming tight layered rows. Newer leaves may show a muted reddish tone underneath.
In a hanging pot, the stems trail more loosely. On a mount, roots can form where the stems rest against bark or cork, and the stems settle into flatter rows.
Dischidia imbricata is native from Indo-China through western Malesia, where it grows on tree bark in humid forest.
Its roots sit in small organic pockets and still get plenty of air. At home, water well, then let the mount or mix partly dry before the next soak. A cork or bark mount helps the stems attach and keeps the leaf rows tighter.
Fresh cuts may release white sap. Rinse hands and tools after pruning or taking cuttings.
Imbricata means overlapping like roof tiles, which fits the way the leaves layer along the stems.
Dischidia imbricata grows in close rows of overlapping leaves when trained on cork or bark.
