Name background of 'Silver Splash' and the wild species

The name 'Silver Splash' is used for silver-mottled forms of Scindapsus pictus. Silver coverage and placement can vary naturally between individual plants.

Wild S. pictus is recorded from southeastern Bangladesh and Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, the Philippines, Borneo, Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi. It climbs in wet tropical forest.

General care for 'Silver Splash'

• Light: Keep 'Silver Splash' in bright indirect or filtered light that reaches from the base of the vine to its newest growth.
• Display: Let the flexible stems trail from a hanging pot or guide them onto a textured support for climbing.
• Watering: Let the top of the mix dry and wait until the pot feels clearly lighter, then water thoroughly and let it drain.
• Room conditions: Warm temperatures around 18–29°C suit S. pictus. Ordinary room humidity is suitable; keep a little air moving around the vine.
• Potting mix: Use an open mix with bark or coarse coco chips and pumice or perlite, plus enough finer organic material to hold some moisture.
• Feeding: Feed as directed on the fertiliser label while the stems are growing. If growth stops, wait to feed again until the plant starts growing.
• Propagation: Take a stem cutting with a healthy leaf joint (node) and root it in warm, lightly moist mix.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container or the potting mix begins to drain more slowly.

Common issues with 'Silver Splash'

• Softly mottled leaves curl and lose firmness as the pot becomes light: Water the pot thoroughly and let it drain. Check a little sooner next time, while the leaves are still firm.
• A wet-looking patch turns soft and spreads quickly: Isolate the vine and cut away soft, spreading tissue with a clean, disinfected tool. Discard the affected material, clean the pot and tools and keep the remaining foliage dry on the surface.
• Older silver-mottled leaves yellow while the potting mix stays heavy: Inspect the roots. With a clean, disinfected tool, remove soft brown roots until only firm, healthy roots remain. Discard the removed roots and repot into fresh, coarse, free-draining mix.
• Leaves wilt and turn grey-brown after the plant gets too cold: Keep the plant warm at a steady room temperature. Water again after the top of the potting mix has dried and the pot has become lighter. Remove leaves that turn brown, dry or soft.
• Silver-patterned leaves show fine pale speckles, webbing, scraped marks, bumps or cottony deposits: Identify mites, thrips, scale or mealybugs before treatment. Once you know the pest, use a product labelled for it on indoor plants and follow the repeat instructions on the label.

Scindapsus comes from the ancient Greek plant name skindapsos. The Latin adjective pictus means painted, decorated or coloured, referring to the patterned foliage of the species.
