How split and fenestrated leaves develop

Fenestrated and divided foliage includes windows, splits, lobes and deeply cut margins. These features appear across Monstera, Rhaphidophora, Philodendron, Amydrium and other climbing or self-supporting plants. Juvenile leaves may begin whole, with stronger divisions developing as the plant gains size and support. Mature leaf form, current growth stage and stem habit define the main differences.

Climbing forms often develop larger or more strongly divided leaves on a stable pole or plank. Self-supporting plants create a wider crown and need more horizontal space. The depth and shape of each division give every genus a distinct silhouette. The aroid substrate guide supports the root conditions used by many split-leaved climbers. Strong filtered exposure, outlined in the light guide, supports mature leaf development without overheating pale tissue.
