An American horticultural hybrid with Asian forest ancestry

Begonia ‘Little Brother Montgomery’ was hybridised by Martin Johnson in Redwood City, California, in the late 1970s from selections of Begonia palmata and Begonia diadema.

Both parent species come from humid Asian forests shaped by warmth, seasonal rainfall and sheltered light, although each occupies its own natural range.

How to care for Begonia ‘Little Brother Montgomery’

Light

Place Begonia ‘Little Brother Montgomery’ within about 0.5 m of an east window or 1 m back from a bright south or west window with the fiercest rays screened. Protect it from the hottest glass light. Otherwise dry pale patches form on the upper surface and the margins curl away from the glass. Move it closer to the window if the branches stretch, the plant opens in the centre and new leaves become smaller. Strong healthy leaves display the broad, deeply lobed leaf shape naturally. Low light weakens the new leaves, while hot sun scorches the surface.

Watering
