Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum grows from eastern Bolivia through southern and south-eastern Brazil to Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina. In seasonally dry tropical vegetation it scrambles over the ground, building a thick stem and strong anchoring roots. This background suits warm rooms, bright filtered light and a loose mix that can dry partly before it is watered again.

How to grow Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum variegata indoors

Light

Give this variegated tree philodendron very bright, indirect light so the green parts can supply the energy needed for its large crown. Pale areas scorch sooner than green ones, so introduce any early or late direct sun gradually and avoid hard midday exposure.

Water

Water thoroughly once the upper part of the mix has dried, then empty the saucer or cover pot. Letting a very large container remain wet at its centre is more dangerous than a brief drying period.

Potting mix

Choose a chunky aroid mix with bark, coarse perlite or pumice and enough finer material to hold some moisture. Strong drainage and a heavy, steady container are important as the stem and deeply divided leaves grow larger and heavier.

Temperature and humidity

Keep it warm, preferably 18–28 °C, and protect the plant from cold glass and draughts below about 15 °C. With moderate humidity, new leaves are less likely to stick or develop dry edges, while spacing and airflow help wet leaf-stalk bases dry promptly.

Feeding and repotting

Feed lightly with a complete fertiliser while new leaves are forming; extra fertiliser cannot create additional variegation. Repot when roots fill the container, avoiding an oversized pot that holds unused wet mix around the roots.

Large-crown management

Plan for a broad, self-supporting plant and leave room for the long leaf lobes before choosing its position. Remove only fully yellow lower leaves, support a leaning trunk with pot weight rather than a climbing pole, and wipe dust from both sides of the blades.

Propagation

Use a rooted division or a stem cutting carrying a healthy bud showing variegation. Watch the first new shoots: an entirely green cutting will not reproduce the cream pattern, and a detached leaf cannot form a new plant.

Cream sections become crisp and brown

Pale sections contain less chlorophyll and mark more readily after strong sun or a dry mix. Shield the plant from hot direct rays, check moisture below the surface and avoid cutting the whole leaf unless the damaged area is completely dry.

New growth is all green or almost all cream

The pattern can fluctuate from shoot to shoot, and brighter light does not create variegation. Keep stems that produce enough green alongside the cream; if propagating, choose a stem joint from balanced growth rather than a fully green or nearly white section.

Yellow leaves accompany soft roots

A large pot that stays waterlogged can cause root loss. Unpot the plant, remove soft brown roots, clean the container and use a fresh chunky mix in a pot only slightly wider than the remaining roots.

Leaves become smaller and less deeply cut

One simpler leaf after repotting is not alarming. If several leaves shrink in succession, first check the filtered light and whether the roots are firm. Increase light gradually if needed, and repot only when healthy roots have filled the container.

Pests hide around the thick stem

Scale and mealybugs collect at leaf-stalk bases, while thrips and spider mites scar or stipple the undersides and emerging leaves. Keep the plant separate, remove the insects you can see and check each new leaf fold while repeating the chosen treatment as directed.

How did the name change from Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum to Philodendron bipinnatifidum?

Thaumatophyllum means ‘wonder leaf’. The epithet bipinnatifidum means twice pinnatifid or deeply divided in a twofold pattern, describing the large lobed blade.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Thaumatophyllum in 1859 in Bonplandia (Hannover), volume 7, page 31.

Stephan Friedrich Ladislaus Endlicher first described it as Philodendron bipinnatifidum in 1837 in Genera Plantarum Secundum Ordines Naturales Disposita, page 237; Heinrich Wilhelm Schott had proposed that name. Cassia Mônica Sakuragui, Luana Calazans, and Simon J. Mayo later placed it in Thaumatophyllum as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum in 2018 in PhytoKeys, volume 98, page 60.

Cassia Mônica Sakuragui, Luana Calazans and Simon Mayo revived Thaumatophyllum for this group in 2018 in PhytoKeys, volume 98. Kew’s World Checklist treats Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum as a synonym of Philodendron bipinnatifidum. Both names are still encountered.
