Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum variegata

Where the species behind Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum variegata grows naturally

Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum occurs naturally from eastern Bolivia through Paraguay and southern and south-eastern Brazil to north-eastern Argentina. It grows in rainforest and riverside forest, seasonally drier woodland, swampy ground and rocky coastal or foothill sites.

These habitats are warm and receive regular rainfall, with drier periods in more open areas. Thick roots that develop along older stems can anchor wild plants in the ground or against nearby trees.

Care for Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum variegata

• Light: Give it plenty of bright filtered light. Gentle direct sun can be added gradually, as large cream areas can scorch after a sudden increase in exposure.
• Watering: Let the top part of the potting mix become lightly dry, keeping a little moisture deeper in the pot. Water thoroughly and let the excess drain.
• Potting mix: Use bark with pumice or lava in a potting mix that drains well around the thick roots and still holds some moisture.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep it warm. Normal household humidity is usually enough.
• Feeding: Feed moderately with a complete houseplant fertiliser while new leaves are forming. Rinse the potting mix with plain water periodically to limit fertiliser build-up.
• Stability: Use a wide, heavy pot to keep the plant stable. Add support if an older stem begins to lean.
• Repotting: Move to a larger pot when the roots are crowded or the plant becomes unstable. Keep the stem at the same depth.
• Propagation: To keep the variegation, separate a rooted side shoot or take a stem cutting with a healthy bud and plenty of green tissue.

Problems and solutions for Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum variegata

• Cream areas become crisp or tan: Strong sun, a dry potting mix or fertiliser build-up can damage the pale areas. Correct the cause, then watch the next few leaves for new brown or tan areas.
• A separate side shoot repeatedly produces fully green leaves: A green shoot can gradually outgrow the variegated part of the plant. Watch the next few leaves. If the shoot continues to produce only green leaves, remove it at the base.
• Several leaves yellow while the potting mix stays wet: Prolonged wetness can stress the roots and lead to rot. Check the roots before watering again. Remove rotten roots with clean scissors, cutting back to firm healthy roots. Discard what you remove and repot in fresh, well-draining mix. The root rot guide covers the remaining recovery steps.
• New foliage develops rings, feathery mosaic or distortion outside the usual variegation pattern: These symptoms can indicate a viral infection such as Dasheen mosaic virus. Isolate the plant and do not take cuttings until the cause is clear. A confirmed viral infection has no cure.
• White wax, sticky residue or fine pale speckles appear: These signs can indicate mealybugs, scale or mites. Check the stem, leaf stalks and both sides of the leaves. Keep the plant away from nearby plants while treating it, and follow the product label. The mealybug guide explains identification and repeat treatment.

Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum variegata is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How did the name change from Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum to Philodendron bipinnatifidum?

Thaumatophyllum means ‘wonder leaf’. The epithet bipinnatifidum means twice pinnatifid or deeply divided in a twofold pattern, describing the large lobed blade.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Thaumatophyllum in 1859 in Bonplandia (Hannover), volume 7, page 31.

Stephan Friedrich Ladislaus Endlicher first described it as Philodendron bipinnatifidum in 1837 in Genera Plantarum Secundum Ordines Naturales Disposita, page 237; Heinrich Wilhelm Schott had proposed that name. Cassia Mônica Sakuragui, Luana Calazans, and Simon J. Mayo later placed it in Thaumatophyllum as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum in 2018 in PhytoKeys, volume 98, page 60.

Cassia Mônica Sakuragui, Luana Calazans and Simon Mayo revived Thaumatophyllum for this group in 2018 in PhytoKeys, volume 98. Kew’s World Checklist treats Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum as a synonym of Philodendron bipinnatifidum. Both names are still encountered.
