Isaac Farwell Holton collected Philodendron holtonianum in Colombia in 1853. Schott named it six years later.

The species inhabits Colombian wet forest from roughly 200 to 1,500 m.

Problems and solutions for Philodendron holtonianum

• Increasing leaf division: Lobe number and depth can increase gradually as the climbing stem matures. Young or recently propagated growth may be simpler, so judge the sequence over several attached leaves.
• Missing tissue: Regular divisions have smooth, repeated outlines. Fresh holes or jagged scalloped margins call for a search for caterpillars, beetles, slugs, snails or physical snagging.
• Distortion in rolled growth: One-sided expansion, silver scars and black specks on a new leaf point towards thrips feeding, while fixed stippling or webbing indicates mites. Separate the vine and inspect rolled and mature growth. Choose a control intended for that pest on indoor ornamentals and follow its reapplication directions.
• Simpler or smaller leaves: Weak filtered light, poor climbing contact or root damage can delay mature division. Improve support and light gradually and check roots before increasing fertiliser.
• Wet roots and simpler leaves: When simpler leaves arrive together with yellowing, a wet pot and roots that are dark or soft, check the root system before blaming immaturity. Remove collapsed roots, replace dense material and let air return between waterings.

When was Philodendron holtonianum first published, and what does it mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” Holtonianum honours the American scientist, educator and traveller Isaac Farwell Holton, who collected the cited specimen in Colombia in 1853.
