Saribus rotundifolius is a tropical fan palm with broad, rounded leaves held on long petioles. Young plants already show the circular, pleated leaf shape that gives this species its rounded fan-palm outline.
This warm-growing palm belongs in bright indoor positions with enough room for expanding leaves. Over time, it develops an upright solitary habit and an open crown carried above long stalks.
The rounded leaves unfold from the crown on long stalks, so open space around the plant matters as the petioles lengthen. The fan blades can tear if pushed against furniture or handled roughly, and older leaves may show minor edge wear as they age.
Keep the palm warm and evenly moist, while leaving enough air around the roots. Cold, wet substrate can damage roots and slow new leaf production.
Place Saribus rotundifolius away from pets and small children who may chew plant material. The petioles can be spiny, so wear gloves or handle the plant slowly when moving it.
Saribus rotundifolius is an accepted palm species in Arecaceae. The combination is credited to Blume and was published in 1838, based on the earlier name Corypha rotundifolia Lam. The epithet rotundifolius refers to round leaves, matching the palm’s broad fan-shaped blades.
