Philodendron ‘Glad Hands’ (quercifolium)

Cultivated identity and species origin of Philodendron ‘Glad Hands’ (quercifolium)

Philodendron ‘Glad Hands’ is a cultivated selection of Philodendron pedatum. The older name Philodendron quercifolium is still used in horticulture for the same species, which explains its parenthetical use with this selection.

Philodendron pedatum is a wet-tropical climber native across southern tropical America.

How to care for Philodendron ‘Glad Hands’

Keep the plant warm and protected from draughts. Feed modestly during active growth, keep the climbing attachment secure and maintain stable conditions around the roots.

Give the plant bright filtered light and increase exposure gradually after moving it to a brighter position. Before watering, feel below the surface and lift the pot. Water when the upper layer feels dry, has lost its cool dampness and the pot is noticeably lighter. If the mix still feels damp or the pot still feels heavy, wait longer. Once the mix is ready, water thoroughly and let all excess drain. Use an airy mix in a freely draining pot so excess moisture can leave the roots readily.

Humidity: Aim for 50–60% humidity around the foliage, with steady air movement as new leaves open.

Temperature: Keep the growing area within about 18–29 °C. Choose a warmer position if temperatures are set to remain below 15 °C.

Give the lengthening stem a firm, stable support and guide aerial roots towards it. Leave clear space around developing leaves so their narrow lobes can open cleanly. Secure the support if it becomes unstable. When roots become crowded, repot and move the root ball and support together to protect established attachments.

For propagation, use a stem section with at least one healthy node, or layer an attached section before separating it. Each cutting or layered section needs a node that can produce a new shoot.

Understanding changes and problems on Philodendron ‘Glad Hands’

Earlier leaves are simple and later leaves divide more: This is normal juvenile-to-mature development, especially after a cutting has restarted. Assess the progression across several leaves and keep filtered light, support and root conditions steady as firmer, more divided growth develops.

A narrow lobe has a clean dry split, silvery scars or fine stippling: Snagging or rubbing commonly causes a single clean split. Silvered scars with dark specks can point to thrips, and fine stippling with webbing can point to mites. Give opening leaves more room and inspect rolled or concealed growth. If pest signs are present, isolate the plant, identify the pest and clean accessible material. Apply a suitable product labelled for that pest to exposed surfaces and sheltered rolled growth, repeating as the label directs. Existing damage will remain, so judge recovery from healthy new growth.

Successive leaves stay small or simple as the stem stretches or leans: Dim light, lost attachment, recent propagation or root stress can slow the return to divided growth. Reattach the stem to its support without constricting it, increase light gradually and check moisture and root condition before adding fertiliser.

The stem base softens, smells unpleasant or begins to collapse: Saturated conditions, cold wet stress or rot may be affecting the stem. Keep the base dry, restore warmth, drainage and airflow, and isolate the plant if the damage advances. Remove only dead, soft tissue and preserve every firm node that could support recovery.

Leaves droop or yellow while the medium stays wet and the pot feels heavy: Prolonged saturation or poor drainage can reduce root-zone oxygen and may lead to root rot. Low light, cold conditions or an oversized pot can slow water use further. Pause watering, empty standing water and clear the drainage holes. Inspect the roots only if decline persists, retain all firm tissue and remove only dead, soft roots. Repot into an airy, freely draining medium if the mix has lost its open structure, then bring watering and light back into balance.

Leaves droop and their edges crisp while the pot feels light and dry: Underwatering is likely, while a water-repellent root ball, heat, dry air, root damage or accumulated salts can create similar signs. Water thoroughly, confirm that the entire root ball is evenly moist and let the excess drain. Check a little sooner next time. If the plant remains wilted in moist medium, inspect the roots and pause additional watering.

Water-soaked, yellow-haloed or dead leaf spots keep enlarging or returning: An advancing pattern can indicate bacterial or fungal leaf-spot disease, often encouraged by wet foliage and weak airflow. Sun scorch, chilling, spray injury or physical damage can leave fixed marks that look similar at first. Isolate an advancing case, keep the foliage dry, improve airflow and remove badly affected tissue with clean tools. Do not propagate from symptomatic nodes, and obtain a local diagnosis before using disease-specific chemicals.

Cottony clusters, fixed bumps, soft-bodied insects or sticky residue appear: These signs can indicate mealybugs, scale or aphids. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and clean off accessible material. Apply a suitable labelled treatment to exposed leaf surfaces, undersides, petiole bases and nodes, then repeat inspection and treatment according to the label so insects in sheltered sites are reached.

Philodendron ‘Glad Hands’ (quercifolium) is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Where does the name Philodendron come from?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
