Epipremnum pinnatum is native across tropical and subtropical Asia through Malesia, northern Australia and the Pacific islands.

It climbs through wet tropical lowland and hill forests on trees and other natural supports.

Support-led care for Epipremnum pinnatum

• Attachment: Provide a vertical surface that aerial roots can grip from an early stage. Sustained upward growth and root contact are central to larger, divided leaves.
• Light: Use bright filtered light and introduce direct sun gradually. Weak light produces smaller blades and longer bare gaps between the leaves.
• Pruning and propagation: Root node cuttings when needed, but expect the new shoot to restart with juvenile foliage. Repeated tip pruning delays mature leaf development.
• Water and substrate: Rewater after the upper part of a coarse, moisture-retentive aroid mix has dried, saturating the rootball and draining fully.
• Climate and container: Temperatures around 18–28 °C, moderate humidity and gentle airflow support active growth. Feed lightly and repot when roots crowd the container, the mix breaks down or the support becomes unstable.

Split leaves in Epipremnum pinnatum

Entire, unsplit leaves are normal on young or trailing growth. Larger divided leaves develop only after sustained climbing with suitable light and root contact.

Long gaps and progressively smaller leaves show that the vine lacks enough usable light or cannot keep climbing continuously on its support.

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does the name Epipremnum pinnatum mean?

Epipremnum combines Greek epi, meaning upon, with premnon, meaning tree trunk, referring to the way the vine attaches to a support. Pinnatum means pinnate or feather-like and refers to the divided leaves of a mature climbing plant.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Epipremnum in 1857 in Bonplandia (Hannover), volume 5, page 45.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Pothos pinnatus in 1763 in Species Plantarum, second edition, page 1324. Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler later placed it in Epipremnum as Epipremnum pinnatum in 1908 in Das Pflanzenreich, IV, 23B, page 60.
