Rhaphidophora megasperma is native to Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. It grows in lowland forest and regrowing forest, often near rivers on clay-rich ground.

• Support and branches: Attach the main vine to a firm support and leave space for the shorter side shoots. Guide or prune a side branch only when it blocks a walkway or pulls the pot off balance.
• Light: Bright indirect light suits the plant. Move it gradually if it has been growing in a much shadier position.
• Watering: Water when the pot feels lighter and the mix has started to dry. Water thoroughly and let excess water drain.
• Potting mix: Use a loose mix that holds some moisture and drains well. Replace it if water starts pooling on the surface or flows through and leaves parts of the mix dry.
• Warmth, humidity and airflow: Keep the plant warm. Normal household humidity is usually suitable, and gentle airflow is useful around dense side shoots.
• Feeding and pruning: Feed according to the fertiliser label while stems and leaves are growing. When growth pauses, stop feeding and wait for the mix to dry further before watering. Shorten an overlong main stem above a node or thin selected side shoots if the plant becomes unbalanced.
• Repotting and propagation: Repot when roots crowd the pot, the support becomes unstable or watering becomes difficult to manage. A cutting with at least one node may first produce a long climbing stem before side branches appear.

• New side shoots lose leaves or stay sparse: If the position is dim, move the plant to bright indirect light. If the mix stays wet, let it dry before watering again. If it becomes very dry, water thoroughly. Give crowded side shoots enough room around the support.
• Branches crowd one side and pull the pot off balance: Redirect flexible shoots, prune selected branches just above the node and use a broad, heavy pot or securely anchored support. Keep enough leafy growth to support the plant.
• Leaves yellow while the centre of the mix stays wet: Examine the roots and lower stem. Use a clean tool to remove every dark soft area, making the last cut through firm healthy tissue. Discard the rotten material, then repot in fresh, loose mix that drains well.
• Tiny pale speckles or bronze patches spread through dense side growth: Check leaf undersides for mites. Isolate the plant, use a product labelled for mites on indoor ornamental plants and repeat at the label interval.

What does Rhaphidophora megasperma mean, and who first published it?

Rhaphidophora combines Greek rhaphis, meaning needle, with phorein, meaning to bear, referring to the needle-like raphide crystals in its tissues. Megasperma combines Greek megas, “large”, and sperma, “seed”, so the name means “large-seeded”.

Justus Carl Hasskarl established the genus Rhaphidophora in 1842 in Flora, volume 25, issue 2, supplement 1, page 11.

Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler first described Rhaphidophora megasperma in 1898 in Botanische Jahrbücher für Systematik, volume 25, page 8.
