Ficus carica variegata is a cream-variegated form of the common fig. Ficus carica comes from a broad region stretching from the eastern Mediterranean through Central Asia to the western Himalaya.

The exact fruit cultivar is unknown, so fruit colour, ripening time and pollination needs may vary.

Seasonal care for a variegated common fig

• Light: Give the plant a very bright position with direct sun. Build exposure gradually after a move so fresh cream sections adjust before receiving the strongest sun.
• Water in active growth: Water thoroughly as the surface begins to dry and keep moisture steady while leaves or figs are developing. Let the container drain freely after every watering.
• Dormancy: Once the leaves fall naturally, water sparingly and let most of the mix dry between waterings. Increase water again when the buds swell.
• Soil and repotting: Use rich, soil-based compost that drains well. Repot when roots densely occupy the pot or water stops soaking evenly through the root ball, moving to a slightly larger container.
• Feeding: Feed during active growth at the label rate, using a high-potassium fertiliser if you want the plant to produce figs. Stop feeding during the leafless rest.
• Pruning and sap safety: Make larger pruning cuts after the risk of severe frost has passed. Wear gloves and wash any sap from your skin promptly, especially before sun exposure, because common fig sap can cause a sun-triggered skin reaction.
• Propagation: Woody stem cuttings or layering can be used to propagate the same cream-variegated form; the exact cream pattern can still vary from leaf to leaf.
• Cold: Protect the container from hard frost.

• A branch repeatedly opens fully green leaves: That shoot has turned fully green. If the next few leaves are also fully green, remove the shoot where it joins the patterned plant.
• Cream areas turn tan or crisp after a move: Sudden hot sun or severe drying can damage the pale tissue. Reduce the strongest exposure, water thoroughly if the pot is dry and increase direct sun gradually again.
• Orange-brown spots or powdery patches spread across the foliage: Fig rust is a likely cause. Collect fallen infected leaves, improve airflow and, if treatment is needed, use a product labelled for fig rust on edible figs and repeat it as directed on the label.
• Webbing, tiny pale speckles, sticky patches or hard brown bumps appear: Inspect the leaves and stems for spider mites or scale. Isolate the plant and, if treatment is needed, use a product labelled for that pest on edible figs and repeat it as directed on the label.
• Leaves yellow while the plant is actively growing and the mix remains wet: Examine the roots. With a clean tool, trim every soft dark section back to firm healthy tissue and clean the tool between cuts. Throw away all decayed material and repot the healthy roots in fresh free-draining mix.

Classical Latin ficus means fig. Carica means ‘of Caria’, an ancient region of Asia Minor.
