Rhodospatha moritziana Schott, published in Oesterreichisches Botanisches Wochenblatt 7: 109 (1857), is a striking terrestrial aroid known for its bold, glossy foliage. Native to Venezuela, it develops large, leathery leaves with a deep green, lustrous upper surface and a paler, matte underside. The reddish-tinged petioles, sharply and narrowly sulcate, give the plant additional ornamental character.
This species originates from Venezuelan forests, where it grows in shaded understories as a terrestrial herb. Its adaptation to dappled light and warm, humid conditions makes it well-suited for indoor cultivation when given similar care.
The genus name Rhodospatha is derived from Greek: rhodon (“rose”) and spathē (“spathe”), referring to its reddish floral spathe. The species epithet moritziana honours Alexander Moritz, a 19th-century naturalist and plant collector.
This unusual Venezuelan aroid combines rare origin with glossy, textural foliage. Order Rhodospatha moritziana today and enjoy a botanical gem that few collectors own.
