Rhodospatha latifolia Poepp. (1845) is a rare hemiepiphytic aroid from South America, valued by collectors for its bold, leathery foliage and climbing habit. In its natural environment, this species can ascend up to 4 m along tree trunks, displaying large, broad leaves that bring a dramatic tropical character indoors.
Native to tropical forests of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil, Rhodospatha latifolia grows attached to trees as a hemiepiphyte. It thrives in shaded understories with high humidity and steady warmth, conditions that should be mirrored in cultivation.
The genus name Rhodospatha derives from Greek rhodon (“rose”) and spathē (“spathe”), referencing the reddish spathe characteristic of some species. The epithet latifolia means “broad-leaved” in Latin, describing its wide leaf blades.
With its broad, glossy foliage and climbing growth habit, Rhodospatha latifolia brings an authentic rainforest presence into your home. A true collector’s piece for tropical plant enthusiasts.
