Epiphyllum oxypetalum

From central Mexico to Nicaragua

Epiphyllum oxypetalum grows wild from central Mexico through Central America to Nicaragua. Its main habitat is tropical forest with a yearly dry season.

Its seasonal forest receives rain during active growth and a drier interval later in the year. Epiphyllum oxypetalum is therefore accustomed to moisture changing with the season beneath filtered canopy light.

Epiphyllum oxypetalum: winter rest and flowering

• Light: Give the flattened stems bright filtered light, with only gentle morning or late-afternoon sun.
• Watering: Use a more even watering rhythm than for a desert cactus, while never leaving the root ball waterlogged.
• Substrate: Keep the root zone airy with bark, fibre and coarse mineral material rather than compact potting mix.
• Temperature: Protect the stems below 15°C during growth and avoid any combination of low temperature and wet roots.
• Humidity: Humidity can be moderately high if the flattened stems dry quickly and have reliable airflow.
• Feeding: Feed only while stems are extending, at reduced strength every 3–4 weeks.
• Repotting: Refresh the mix every 2–3 years or when it loses its open structure; use a secure hanging container for the arching stems.
• Propagation: Take a healthy 15–23 cm stem section, let the cut end callus for several days and root it in an airy epiphytic mix.
• Winter: Let more of the mix dry in winter and resume feeding only when new growth begins.
• Flowering: Keep mature plants undisturbed during the cooler winter rest to support bud formation.

Common problems with Epiphyllum oxypetalum

• Limp or dull stem segments: Check the substrate and stem base before watering. A dry root ball with firm roots indicates thirst; damp substrate, a sour smell or a soft base indicates root loss or rot and should not receive more water.
• A dark, soft stem segment: Cut the affected segment back to clean, firm tissue with a disinfected blade and clean the tool between cuts. Let a healthy cutting callus before placing it in fresh, lightly moist, airy substrate, and correct the wet or cold conditions that caused the rot.
• Mature growth without flower buds: Confirm that the plant is mature and receives bright filtered light. If both are true, a continuously warm, wet or heavily fed winter may have prevented bud initiation; provide a cooler, somewhat drier rest during the next winter without leaving the roots dry for weeks.
• Flower buds dropping before opening: A sudden move, a dry root ball or a sharp temperature change can abort developing buds. Once buds are visible, keep the plant in one position and maintain steady moisture and temperature.

Reliable veterinary toxicity data are limited for Epiphyllum species and hybrids. Keep the trailing stems out of reach as a precaution and contact a veterinarian if a pet eats the plant and becomes unwell.

A name meaning sharp-petalled

Oxypetalum combines Greek roots for sharp and petal. Epiphyllum itself means upon the leaf, referring to flowers produced along flattened, leaf-like stems.

Haworth published Epiphyllum as a genus in 1812 in Synopsis Plantarum Succulentarum. Augustin Pyramus de Candolle first described the species under another genus. Adrian Hardy Haworth published the accepted combination Epiphyllum oxypetalum in Philosophical Magazine and Annals in 1829.
