Native range and habitat of Epiphyllum oxypetalum

Epiphyllum oxypetalum comes from central Mexico through Central America to Nicaragua. In its native range, it lives on trees in tropical forests that have a distinct dry season.

Its roots grow in shallow pockets of leaf litter and other organic material on branches, where water drains freely and air reaches the roots.

Indoor care for Epiphyllum oxypetalum

• Space and support: A mature plant can reach around 2 m. Use a stable pot and give long branches room to arch, or support upright stems before they become heavy.
• Light: Bright filtered or indirect light is ideal. Partial shade is suitable, with protection from strong midday sun.
• Watering: When the plant is growing strongly, water thoroughly and let the pot drain. Water again when the top of the mix starts to dry, while some moisture still remains deeper in the pot.
• After flowering: Keep the mix lightly moist for about six weeks after the flowers finish. Return to the usual watering routine when new growth starts.
• Preparing for buds: Later, before the next flowering season, give the plant a cooler, drier spell at about 11–14°C. Water less so the mix stays just moist. Once buds are visible, keep it above 15°C and resume normal watering.
• Feeding: Use a high-potassium fertiliser three or four times while the plant is growing, following the product label. Pause feeding during the cooler, drier spell.
• Temperature and humidity: Outside this cooler spell, keep it above 15°C. Moderate humidity suits the broad stems.
• Substrate and repotting: Grow in epiphytic cactus compost or another airy, fast-draining mix. It often flowers best once the roots have filled the pot. Repot when the mix feels dense, water takes longer to drain, or the plant becomes top-heavy. Move up by one pot size.
• Propagation: Take stem cuttings from healthy growth and allow the cut ends to dry before rooting them. Seed propagation is also possible and takes longer to reach flowering size.

Common problems with Epiphyllum oxypetalum

• A mature plant does not flower: Low light, an oversized pot or skipping the cooler, drier spell can all reduce flowering. Move it gradually into brighter filtered light and give the roots time to fill the current container before moving up a size. Give it the 11–14°C cooler spell before the next flowering season.
• Brown or bleached marks appear on flat stems: Strong direct sun can scorch the tissue. Shift it to a position with filtered light and let new growth develop under gentler conditions.
• White cottony clusters appear along stems: Mealybugs can cluster along this species’ stems. Keep the plant away from others and clean off visible colonies. Choose a houseplant treatment that lists mealybugs on the label and follow any stated follow-up timing.
• The plant base or lower stem turns soft and dark: Waterlogged substrate can lead to rot. Lift the root ball and cut away soft brown or black roots and stem tissue with a clean blade. Stop cutting when the remaining tissue feels firm and looks healthy. Discard the damaged material and allow the cut surfaces to dry. Pot rooted material into a fresh, fast-draining mix, and root healthy detached stems separately as cuttings.

Epiphyllum combines Greek epi, meaning upon, with phyllon, meaning leaf. Oxypetalum combines Greek oxys, meaning sharp, with petalon, meaning petal.

Adrian Hardy Haworth established the genus Epiphyllum in 1812 in Synopsis Plantarum Succulentarum, page 197.

Augustin Pyramus de Candolle first described it as Cereus oxypetalus in 1828 in Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis, volume 3, page 470. Adrian Hardy Haworth later placed it in Epiphyllum as Epiphyllum oxypetalum in 1829 in Philosophical Magazine and Annals of Philosophy, new series, volume 6, page 109.
