Peperomia 'Quito' is a compact Peperomia caperata cultivar with orange-brown to bronze-toned leaves and a dense rosette habit. The leaves are cordate, slightly concave, and strongly furrowed, giving the plant a textured surface that catches light differently through the day.
This cultivar stays low and rounded rather than trailing. It suits a snug pot, where the short stems and closely packed leaves can build a flattened globe shape. The colour is strongest in good indirect light, while harsh direct sun can mark the leaves.
Peperomia 'Quito' was discovered as a naturally occurring leaf mutation of Peperomia caperata 'Red Luna' in Denmark. It was selected for its orange-brown foliage, compact habit, and high leaf count.
Peperomia caperata itself is native to Brazil and is known for dense mounds of deeply corrugated, heart-shaped leaves. 'Quito' grows best in warm conditions, filtered light, and an airy root zone, with careful watering around the fine roots. Its textured crown stays fuller when the substrate drains well and the base of the plant remains clean.
Peperomia caperata is listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Peperomia 'Quito' is a Peperomia caperata cultivar, so it is generally treated as a low-risk ornamental houseplant, while regular chewing should still be discouraged.
Peperomia comes from Greek roots meaning “pepper” and “resembling”, reflecting the genus’ relationship with Piper nigrum. The species name caperata comes from Latin for “wrinkled”, matching the rippled leaf texture of Peperomia caperata and its cultivars.
Peperomia 'Quito' gives a small pot warm bronze colour, dense growth, and the classic rippled texture of Peperomia caperata.
