Caladium 'White Christmas' is a white fancy-leaf Caladium with broad, heart-shaped leaves and clear green veins across a pale surface. The edge can appear pale to lightly green-edged depending on the plant and leaf age. Because the leaves are so light, scorch and dry marks show quickly.
During warm growth, the tuber sends up individual leaf stalks that form an upright pot plant. When conditions cool or light becomes weaker, growth may slow and the tuber can rest. During rest, keep the pot much drier.
Each leaf is carried on a separate petiole from the tuber. As new petioles appear, the plant forms a fuller upright shape. The pale blades show sun scorch, dry edges and handling marks more clearly than darker-leaved Caladiums.
In pots, it usually stays compact to medium-sized. Final size depends on tuber size, warmth, light and watering. Older leaves may yellow before rest and can be removed once spent.
Caladiums restart from firm tubers. If a tuber is divided, each viable piece needs a visible growing point and should dry before planting. Older plants may produce a small spathe and spadix. The pale leaves are the main feature.
Place this plant where pets and children cannot reach it. Leaves, petioles and tuber tissue can irritate the mouth and stomach if ingested. Sap from cut parts may bother sensitive skin.
Caladium is a tropical American aroid genus grown from underground tubers, with a name linked to Malay keladi. Caladium 'White Christmas' is a widely grown white-leaved cultivar. 'White Christmas' refers to its bright pale foliage.
