Anthurium Potting Mix

• 2 parts Coco Coir – retains moisture and aerates the mix.
• 1 part Worm Castings – organic, slow-release nutrients for steady growth.
• 3 parts Perlite – increases airflow and drainage, helping reduce compaction.
• 2.5 parts Orchid Bark – provides coarse structure and supports root attachment.
• 1.5 parts Coconut Husk Chips – lightweight, moisture-balancing chunks that keep the mix open.
• A little bit of Activated Carbon – adds a small porous carbon fraction in damp mixes; it does not replace airflow, cleanup or correct watering.
• A little bit of lava gravel – improves aeration and adds mineral structure.
• Organic nutrients: support steady Anthurium growth over time.

To mix your own: use 10 parts total following the ratios above. Add more bark if you want faster drainage and drying, or more coir if your environment is very dry and the mix dries too quickly.

Use Anthurium Mix when you want to give Anthuriums a coarse, epiphyte-style substrate that supports well-aerated roots and controlled moisture.

• When to repot: repot when roots circle the pot, when growth slows without another clear cause or when old soil has compacted and no longer drains well.
• Remove old substrate: gently loosen the plant from its pot and take off as much tired mix as you can without tearing functional roots.
• Inspect roots: remove loose old soil by hand where possible, then cut away dead or rotten sections with sterilised scissors. Rinse only if old soil is compacted or difficult to remove safely.
• Prepare the pot: choose a pot with drainage holes and add enough Anthurium Mix to set the plant at the right height and create a supportive foundation.
• Position the plant: place Anthurium so the root crown sits just below the rim; spread roots gently through the fresh mix.
• Backfill and settle: gradually add Anthurium Mix around the roots, keeping the structure loose and airy; lightly pat down to stabilise without compressing the substrate.
• First watering: water generously after repotting so the mix settles around the roots and remaining air pockets close.
• Ongoing watering: allow only the top few centimetres to dry between waterings; avoid leaving water in cachepots for long periods so the lower part of the pot does not stay saturated.

Monitor how quickly the mix dries in your conditions and adjust watering frequency rather than volume to keep the root zone well oxygenated.

• EC: around 1.4.
• NPK (mg/L): roughly 118 – 3.1 – 184.
• Organic matter: about 69 %.
• Dry matter: about 21 %.
• Water retention capacity: around 64 %, giving a moist but well-aerated root zone.
• Structural stability: typically 3–4 years indoors before coco coir, coconut husk and bark gradually degrade and drainage slows.
• Bioactive? Yes – compatible with bioactive-style setups when combined with appropriate fauna.
• Pet considerations: No – contains fertiliser, perlite and activated carbon and is not intended for ingestion by pets or children.
