Perlite – lightweight aeration for indoor potting mixes
Perlite is expanded volcanic glass with a very low weight and a porous structure. In houseplant substrates, its main value is physical: it changes texture and helps prevent the whole pot from settling into a dense mass.
What you get
- Lightweight aeration: opens dense soil without making pots heavy
- Drainage support: helps water move through the full mix
- Neutral mineral: works in many custom recipes
- Blend-through use: most useful when distributed evenly
More information
Perlite is especially useful in propagation mixes, tropical potting blends and general soil that needs more air. It does not replace bark for large chunks or pumice for extra weight.
Best use cases
Like other drainage materials, perlite works best throughout the root zone. A bottom layer does not repair a compacted mix above it.
How to use Perlite
- Aeration: Blend into potting mixes to keep them lighter and less compacted.
- Propagation: Useful in propagation blends where fast oxygen exchange matters.
- Role: Use as an amendment rather than a complete potting medium.
Prep and handling for Perlite
- Dust control: Pre-moisten lightly before mixing to reduce dust in the air.
