Perlite
Perlite is expanded volcanic glass. The lightweight grains loosen fine potting soil and create air spaces between wetter organic particles.
Blend it through the pot
Mix perlite evenly with coir, potting soil or bark. Use a finer blend for young roots and an open, coarser texture where established roots need more air.
For rooting cuttings
Some cuttings can root in moist perlite alone; others benefit from a portion of coir or fine propagation medium that makes moisture easier to manage.
Handling and watering
Dampen dusty perlite before handling and avoid breathing the dust. It contains no fertiliser. Check moisture within the finished mix and do not rely on a bottom layer to prevent waterlogging.
