Epiphyllum chrysocardium is an epiphytic cactus with broad, deeply lobed green stems that give the plant its fern-like look. The stems can become long and wide with age, forming a hanging plant from flat cactus tissue.
This species has broad lobed stems. Mature plants can produce large, fragrant, white night-opening flowers with yellow-toned inner parts, but flowering depends on plant age, light, seasonal rest and stable roots.
Epiphyllum chrysocardium belongs to the cactus family, Cactaceae. It is native to Mexico and grows in seasonally dry tropical conditions, where epiphytic roots experience air, organic matter, filtered light and periodic moisture changes.
The plant develops large photosynthetic stems with lobed margins and areoles set along the edges. In a pot, young plants can look modest at first, then become much larger as mature stems broaden and lengthen. That growth pattern makes hanging space and careful handling important, because older stems can be heavy and can crease if bent sharply.
Epiphyllum chrysocardium is mainly a soft-stemmed cactus, but its large hanging stems can snap if pulled. Keep it away from pets and children that chew or tug plants, and remove damaged pieces with clean tools so they do not rot against healthy stems.
The accepted name is Epiphyllum chrysocardium Alexander. Epiphyllum refers to flowers borne on leaf-like flattened stems, while chrysocardium combines Greek-derived elements for “gold” and “heart”, a reference to the species’ yellow-toned flower centre.
Epiphyllum chrysocardium develops broad, fern-like stem growth and can produce large white flowers on mature plants.
