Philodendron 'Dean McDowell' combines the velvety heart-shaped foliage of Philodendron gloriosum with the bolder venation and vigour of Philodendron pastazanum, producing a creeping hybrid with very large leaves and a thick horizontal rhizome. Unlike climbers, it spreads outward in a wide container, with mature leaves often reaching 50–60 cm or more under strong indoor conditions.
Bright, indirect light, a wide shallow pot, high humidity, and an airy, organic aroid mix support the best growth, while the substrate should stay lightly moist rather than soggy. Because the rhizome travels laterally, deep pots are less useful than broad ones. New growth often shows a soft pink tint before hardening to richer green with pale veins.
It is mildly toxic if ingested and best suited to growers who have space for a horizontal statement plant.
