Peperomia clusiifolia 'Red Margin' is a colorful cultivar from the Caribbean species known for its upright, semi-succulent growth. Its thick leaves are glossy green in the center and edged with a vivid red margin, creating a bold contrast that stands out in any collection. Compact, resilient, and easy to care for, this plant adds both color and structure to indoor displays.
This cultivar develops fleshy, elliptic leaves on upright stems, typically reaching 30 – 40 cm in height indoors. The leaf edges display a bright red to pink flush that intensifies in good light. With time, it forms a bushy clump with an architectural look, making it a decorative choice for modern interiors. Flower spikes may appear, but the foliage is the true highlight.
The species Peperomia clusiifolia originates from the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, where it grows in tropical habitats. The cultivar name 'Red Margin' refers to its strikingly colored edges, a trait that makes it distinct from the plain green form. In the horticultural trade, it is sometimes also sold as “Jelly Peperomia.”
Excess water can cause root rot and mushy stems. Too little light may fade the red edges, while harsh direct sun can scorch the leaf surface. Wrinkling indicates underwatering.
‘Red Margin’ grows slowly but steadily and rarely needs frequent repotting. Its upright habit makes it an excellent focal plant for tabletops or grouped arrangements. Occasional pruning of leggy stems keeps it compact.
The genus name Peperomia comes from Greek peperi (“pepper”) and homoios (“resembling”), as these plants are related to black pepper (Piper nigrum). The species epithet clusiifolia means “with leaves like Clusia,” referencing its similarity to the thick leaves of that genus.
With its bold red-edged leaves and compact size, Peperomia clusiifolia 'Red Margin' is an eye-catching yet easy-care foliage plant. Order now to add a splash of color and resilience to your collection.
