Peperomia caperata 'Luna Red' is a dark red ripple peperomia with heart-shaped, deeply veined leaves. The foliage sits in a compact clump, with new leaves opening from the centre and older leaves forming a dense rounded edge. Its colour ranges from burgundy to purplish-crimson, especially where the leaf grooves create shadow.
This is a small, leaf-focused plant. The flower spikes can appear on mature specimens, but they stay narrow and pale, so the foliage remains the main feature. Indoors, 'Luna Red' is best grown warm, in bright filtered light, with a potting mix that does not stay heavy around the roots.
Peperomia caperata is native to south-eastern Brazil, where it grows in wet tropical conditions. 'Luna Red' keeps the species’ wrinkled leaf surface but is selected for its dark red foliage. The plant’s compact clumping habit makes the colour appear concentrated rather than spread out over long stems.
The dense crown needs clean watering and good airflow. Water sitting between the leaves can leave marks, while cold wet substrate can damage the roots before the foliage shows clear symptoms. A small pot and open substrate help the plant keep its shape without staying wet for too long.
Peperomia caperata is generally regarded as non-toxic to pets. Place it away from animals that chew leaves repeatedly, as any swallowed plant material can irritate digestion.
Peperomia belongs to Piperaceae, the pepper family. The species epithet caperata means wrinkled, a direct reference to the rippled leaves. The cultivar name 'Luna Red' is used for this dark red selection.
Peperomia caperata 'Luna Red' keeps deep burgundy-crimson colour in a small, textured clump.
