Hoya carnosa 'Compacta' is the curled-leaf wax plant with dense, rope-like vines and thick, puckered green leaves. Each pair of rigid leaves folds tightly around the stem, giving the plant a slow-building hanging shape as the vines lengthen over time.
This cultivar grows as a stem-rooting, semi-succulent Hoya vine with curled leaves and fine roots. It prefers an airy root zone, measured watering and a fixed position once new roots and flowering spurs begin to form. The folded foliage gives the plant its recognisable rope shape, and the leaf folds need regular checks because dust, dry flower remains and mealybugs can hide between them.
Hoya carnosa is a climbing epiphyte or lithophyte in subtropical habitats, where roots attach to bark, rock surfaces and loose organic debris. In a pot, The roots need oxygen around them, while the thick leaves allow the plant to handle short dry periods between thorough waterings.
'Compacta' differs from standard Hoya carnosa through its folded leaf form. The stems remain vines, but the curled foliage sits close to the stem and creates a heavier, more layered look. As the plant matures, older vines may form short flowering spurs. Keep these spurs in place after flowering, because Hoya carnosa can bloom again from the same points.
Hoya carnosa 'Compacta' can become heavy as the ropes lengthen. A secure hanging pot, secure shelf or loose frame is worth setting up early, because frequent repositioning can interrupt new root and spur development.
Hoya carnosa is listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing can still damage the plant and may upset sensitive stomachs, so keep long vines away from pets and children who bite leaves. Cut stems can release sticky sap; wash your hands after pruning.
Hoya carnosa belongs to Apocynaceae. The genus Hoya honours Thomas Hoy, gardener to the Duke of Northumberland, and carnosa means fleshy, referring to the species’ thick leaves. 'Compacta' refers to the dense, curled growth that distinguishes this plant from flat-leaved Hoya carnosa.
Hoya carnosa 'Compacta' slowly builds heavy rope-like vines, making a secure hanger or secure shelf important as the stems lengthen.
