Clusia rosea 'Princess' is a compact form of the autograph tree with thick, glossy green leaves and stems that become firmer with age. The leaves are broad, leathery and slightly succulent. As the plant matures, it branches into a small woody shrub.
Clusia rosea comes from tropical parts of Florida, the Caribbean, Central America and northern South America. In nature it can grow as a tree and may begin life above ground before rooting more firmly as it matures. Indoors, it needs bright light, warmth and an airy mix so the roots do not stay wet for too long.
Clusia rosea belongs to the Clusiaceae. It has opposite leaves, firm stems and branching that becomes woodier as the plant matures. Outdoor plants in tropical climates can become trees, while indoor plants stay much smaller in pots.
Mature plants can produce white to pinkish flowers, but this is uncommon indoors. As a houseplant, Clusia rosea 'Princess' is mainly grown for its thick evergreen leaves and upright stems.
The milky sap can irritate skin and mucous membranes. Keep Clusia rosea 'Princess' out of reach of pets and small children, and wash hands after pruning.
Clusia honours Charles de l’Écluse, also known as Clusius. The species name rosea refers to the rose-coloured flowers of the species.
