Begonia 'Corallina de Lucerna', commonly grown as Begonia 'Lucerna', is a tall cane Begonia with spotted leaves, red-toned undersides and pendant flower clusters. It grows upward on jointed stems, forming a leafy cane plant that can be shaped by pruning as it matures.
The leaves are elongated and asymmetrical, with silver spotting across the upper surface. Mature plants can produce generous clusters of pink to coral flowers, especially when grown warm, bright and evenly watered.
Begonia 'Corallina de Lucerna' is a cane-like cultivar raised by Wettstein in 1892. In cultivation, it is widely treated as a hybrid connected with Begonia teuscheri × Begonia coccinea, and the same cultivar also appears in cultivation as Begonia 'Lucerna'.
As a cane Begonia, it grows from fibrous roots into upright, segmented stems. These stems can lengthen quickly in warm bright conditions and can be cut back above nodes to build a balanced framework. Each pruning point can encourage new shoots, while healthy stem sections can be rooted as cuttings.
Begonia 'Lucerna' forms a fuller framework when older canes are pruned above active nodes. Rotate the pot occasionally so the stems grow evenly toward the light.
Begonia 'Lucerna' contains soluble calcium oxalates, with the strongest concentration in roots and lower tissues. Remove cut stems, fallen pieces and rooted cuttings from areas used by pets or children that chew plants. Clean hands after pruning or propagation.
Begonia carries the name of Michel Bégon, the botanical patron honoured in the genus. Begonia 'Corallina de Lucerna', also widely known as Begonia 'Lucerna', is a tall cane-like cultivar in Begoniaceae.
Mature Begonia 'Corallina de Lucerna' combines tall silver-spotted canes, wing-shaped leaves and hanging coral-pink bloom clusters.
