Goeppertia rufibarba 'Blue Grass', often still sold under its former Calathea label, is one of the few prayer plants that adds tactile appeal alongside visual interest. Its long, narrow leaves are matte green on top and deep wine-red underneath, all covered in soft fuzz – giving this cultivar its signature velvety feel. The leaf edges undulate slightly, catching light as they move in response to the day-night rhythm.
The name 'Blue Grass' references the cool-toned, blue-green cast that appears on new foliage in certain light, especially when contrasted against the burgundy undersides. The overall shape is upright and bushy, creating soft movement and texture in any bright corner.
Goeppertia rufibarba is native to the understory of Brazil’s tropical forests, where it grows in warm, shaded conditions with high humidity and loose, well-draining soil. 'Blue Grass' is a selected cultivar bred for its cool-toned top surface and improved indoor form. As with all Goeppertia species, it exhibits nyctinasty – leaf movement that responds to light levels across the day.
This plant is non-toxic to pets and people, making it a safe and stylish option for homes with animals or children.
'Blue Grass' rewards consistent care – it doesn’t like extremes or surprises. Use filtered water, keep humidity stable, and avoid overwatering. Rotate the plant to keep leaf growth even and upright. If conditions are stable, new leaves will emerge regularly, adding to the soft, upright fullness that makes this cultivar so visually calming. Its velvety texture makes it a standout in any foliage collection.
The genus Goeppertia was named in honor of German botanist Heinrich Göppert. The species name rufibarba means “red beard,” referring to the fine hairs found on the leaf undersides and petioles. The cultivar name 'Blue Grass' alludes to the cool-toned cast of the foliage, which shifts slightly depending on the light conditions.
