Pomelo, Citrus maxima, is a large-fruited citrus species with a broad evergreen crown, aromatic leaves and fragrant white flowers. Mature fruit can be rounded or pear-shaped, with a thick rind and much more weight than most container citrus fruit.
Pomelo needs generous pot space because it builds a broad crown and a large root system. It can grow well as a mobile container tree in cooler climates, but regular fruiting is most realistic on mature, well-rooted plants with enough branch strength to carry large fruit.
Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr. is native from Assam to Indo-China. Pomelo ancestry appears in grapefruit and many orange hybrids.
The species name maxima means largest, which fits a citrus known for very large fruit.
Pomelo grows into a woody tree with a wide leafy crown. The leaves are broad and aromatic, and mature plants can carry fruit heavy enough to affect branch balance. Light pruning while the plant is young helps it make stronger branches before it carries heavy fruit.
Move up gradually as the roots fill the container; this gives the plant fresh room while helping the mix dry evenly.
Pomelo peel, leaves and cut stems contain aromatic citrus oils. Keep plant material out of reach of pets, and wash your hands after pruning or handling damaged peel.
