Alocasia scalprum is a compact Philippine Alocasia from Samar, grown for narrow blade-shaped leaves, embossed venation and a cool blue-green finish as the foliage matures. It is often known by the nickname Samar Lance, which reflects the plant’s long, pointed leaf shape. Its compact habit keeps attention on the slender blades and firm leaf surface.

The plant grows from a corm or short rhizome and forms a small clump over time. Leaves emerge greener and softer, then harden into a darker, glossier blade with visible ribbing. Mature leaves can show a subtle metallic cast, especially when clean leaves catch filtered light from the side.

The leaf of Alocasia scalprum is long, slender and sharply pointed, with a central midrib that gives the blade a clean linear pull. The surface is smooth to slightly embossed, with veins sitting just enough below or above the surface to catch light. The blade can mature from brighter green into darker green, bluish green or grey-green tones. On established plants, the narrow leaves often gain a slightly folded, canoe-like line along the midrib, which strengthens the lance shape while the plant stays compact.

New leaves arise from the base in sequence, and older leaves age as the corm produces fresh growth. The plant remains self-supporting in a pot, with petioles lifting the narrow blades above the base and leaving enough space around the base for air to move.

Alocasia scalprum is accepted as a species native to Samar in the Philippines and grows in the wet tropical biome. In indoor cultivation, it needs consistent indirect light, warm temperatures, high humidity and a substrate that drains freely while retaining a light reserve of moisture.

Cultivated plants can show some variation in leaf width, surface texture and colour depth. This plant has narrow, pointed, glossy leaves and a blue-green finish on mature blades. As the corm matures, new leaves usually gain stronger blade length, clearer ribbing and a firmer surface while the plant stays compact and rooted close to the surface.

Light, moisture and substrate for scalprum

• Light: bright softened daylight keeps the leaves firm and well coloured. Strong midday exposure can heat the narrow blades quickly, so increase brightness gradually.
• Water: water once the upper 20–30% of the mix has dried. The corm responds to even moisture followed by full drainage.
• Substrate: use a fine-to-medium chunky aroid mix with bark, pumice or perlite, coco fibre and a small moisture-holding fraction. Air around the corm is as important as hydration.
• Humidity: keep humidity around 60–80% for smooth leaf expansion and fewer dry tips. Cabinets and vitrines suit smaller plants when air exchange remains gentle.
• Temperature: active growth needs warmth below the soil line as well as warm air around the leaves.
• Feeding: use a diluted complete fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Small plants take low-strength repeated feeding well as new leaves develop.

Compact habit and firm leaves

Alocasia scalprum grows neatly when the pot matches the corm size. A close-fitting container keeps moisture easier to manage around the base and gives new leaves a steadier expansion cycle. Repot when roots have filled the current container or when the mix loses structure, usually into a pot one small size up.

Leaf cleaning matters on this species because dust can flatten the metallic effect. Support each blade from below and wipe gently with a soft damp cloth, following the length of the leaf. Keep leaf sprays light, as residues can sit in the ribbing or petiole bases. Rotate the plant while growth is active so new leaves develop evenly toward the light.

Propagation is by division of offsets or corm sections with active growth points. Small divisions establish in warm, humid conditions with gentle light and a tight pot. The new plant grows slowly at first while roots form, then begins producing leaves with stronger shape and a clearer lance outline.

• Yellowing lower leaves: check moisture depth and root health first. A single old leaf can age naturally, while several yellow leaves point to a base or watering imbalance.
• Dry tips: dry air, salt build-up or uneven watering can mark the narrow blades. Flush the mix and keep humidity more even.
• Drooping leaves: sudden droop can follow dry roots, cold stress or a saturated lower pot. Feel the mix below the surface before watering again.

• Pest damage: thrips and mites leave silvering, speckles or distorted new leaves. Check the backs of narrow blades and the folded new spear.

Handling firm narrow leaves

Alocasia scalprum contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing the leaves, petioles or corm can irritate the mouth and throat and may cause drooling, swelling, vomiting or swallowing difficulty. Place the plant away from pets and children, and wash hands after handling cut tissue.
